  • Another indication would be if it freezes with low air volume on a cool day, but won't
provide any real cooling on a hot day with high fan flow.

    • Booked it in tomorrow with an ac guy that my mechanic recommended so we will see if they can find the leak. Gas is low so it is slowly coming out somewhere!

      • Ok, I am happy and sad at the same time. Happy because this guy found the issue, sad because its a $700 fix. Condenser is stuffed so he is ripping it out, replacing with dense condenser, cleaning it all, new filter under the dash and also regassing it so I suppose $700 isn't too bad. As I said to him I have had it regassed 4 times now by people who obviously dont know what they're doing so I have spent about the same amount in gas over the last two years anyway.

Fingers crossed it will be fixed once and for all!

        • Yeah thanks to the carbon tax, costs a fortune now for regassing. At least you found the problem. I imagine he will need the car for a day or two to pull apart and fix it. Cheers Steve

yes an overnight stay... He says he thinks he can get the evap out without pulling the whole dash apart and can get to it with just the glovebox out. sorry it is the evap that is stuffed not condenser as above, having a moment!

              • ive never changed a evap or condensor in a prado, done plenty of landcruiser utes, but its not a difficult job. had the old mans fan box out the other day in his prado and the evap didnt look like it would be to hard to change out.

                Cheers Joel

                • I recon the dash will need to come out to get the evaporator out, its inside the heater box, some pics attached, not the same car but you will get the idea

                  • They don't pull the dash out when they put the air in at the dealerships. Looking at it when I did the thermistor mod I'd say it will be straight out under the dash..... Cheers Steve

I'm confused, the carbon tax is gone.
                      Maybe check the facts.

                      • What cause they have dropped the tax you think they have dropped their prices !! I don't see the delivery prices dropping on all our goods since petrol has dropped over 30c a litre ..... Cheers Steve

Nope the ac guy said he got it out and changed it over just from pulling the glovebox out, no need for dash removal.

                            • Gunna be a long 6 months waiting lol... Some times having aircon that's fitted after it arrives at the dealer has its advantages. Not sure bout the climate air as its fitted in Japan when it's put together in the factory, but I would say it's the same only diff few more flaps and vacuum hoses and things probably in the way controlling the climate control.... Let's hope it's a great outcome... Cheers Steve

                              • So i gave this Mod a go after reading through this thread about 5 times.I couldn't really get very good access to the thermistor, but was able to splice and solder in a 50k Potentiometer in Parallel. I set it at 9.5k Ohm and then set it up.

I also replaced the cabin filter which was in dire need of replacement. I should have bought online but went to covs and paid more. oh well.

So I dont have a thermometer but in any case it feels "bloody cold". I'm yet to take it for a drive when it is hot, but looking forward to the improvement to the aircon.

                                A few questions:

How often should the aircon compressor be kicking in and out? I can hear it every 10 seconds or so. Is this bad?
I'd be interested in seeing what resistance you guys are getting at various temperatures. Anyway i just want it to be cold, and to not freeze!

Thank you so much to everyone who contributed to this!
