Thanks mate i will look into it for sure............I did buy a complete aftermarket set off the net but it's cheap and nasty so never bothered fitting it.

How much did Toyota sting you for the original key set if you dont mind?

I can't remember the exact price for the keys, but it is something like $400 each. The keys and door control receiver are very expensive genuine.

There are several that have bought aftermarket ones that seem quite happy with them on this thread:

As long as you can get the the key internals from somewhere it would be by far a cheaper option.

Having said that, I paid through the nose and bought genuine keys and am very happy with the genuine keyless entry system, not a dodgy aftermarket set up. Maybe it is a small price to pay for a plug and play keyless entry?

I should probably also add that now I have the original keys I will definitely buy the aftermarket ones if I have a need again.

Can you source a key and the module from the wreckers?

          Cheaper...

            Hi Bill,

Yes, you should be able to get both components a lot cheaper.

I only bought the genuine keys because the Toyota parts that I went to insisted that all Prado's had keyless entry.

Just came across this - thanks for the pics, very helpful indeed. I also have a 2008 Standard, with no remote locking. Didn't really give it much thought until recently, when for some unknown reason I decided it would be a "nice-to-have". After quite a bit of research I found where the remote receiver should be, opened up the lining and of course there is no receiver - but there IS a connector for it. I found a used receiver and have bought it - not here yet. I think the seller said it was from a 2003 Prado, so from what you say it is one of the earlier ones. I have been referred to a locksmith who claims to be a gun with car remotes etc etc. I will spell it all out to them, and I'm hopeful they will be able to supply a remote that can be made to work. I'd prefer to have a separate remote and just continue using my existing keys - I think that should be possible. I'm sort of assuming that even though there are receivers which operate on different frequencies, the signals they send to the door locks should be the same, yes? Should just be 12V positive and negative pulses I'm guessing. Anyway, we will see in a week or two! Thanks again.

My early-model receiver just arrived and has been installed. But I'm having trouble working out what frequency it uses. The later (green) one very conveniently has its operating frequency moulded onto the plastic case - 433.92MHz. But the earlier blue ones don't. I can't find an FCC ID on the outside of it, and I don't want to try opening it up to find it. If anyone knows the FCC ID of the earlier one, or its operating frequency, please post!

EDIT: from some searching on Ebay I am fairly certain that the earlier blue receiver operates at 304MHz. There are people selling the remotes/keys for the 2002-2004 Prados which specify that they use that frequency. I have bought one and I'm optimistic that I will be able to get it all going without having to resort to a locksmith. Because this receiver was used in a previous vehicle, I went through the procedure for removing any existing remotes from it. I got the responses as described in the procedure, so even more optimistic now that i will be able to program a new remote. The remote I have bought is (or can be) also a key, but I will just continue using my current keys and cut the blade off this new one so it's just like a fob.

For anyone looking here... I have achieved success, and my faithful old Prado Standard now has keyless entry.

Just to recap my situation: 2008 Prado with central locking using the key, but no remotes. After researching online I discovered that it had no remote receiver box for a remote to communicate with, but it DID have the necessary connector in the wiring. So I looked on Ebay and was able to get a used remote receiver. The one I bought was the earlier variant, from a 2002-2004 Prado, and it operates at 304MHz. I installed it and went through the procedure to de-program any previously programmed remotes, and I got the expected responses, so I was fairly sure it was going to work. I went ahead and bought an after-market key/remote (Ebay again) for a 2002-2004 Prado (i.e. one that works at 304 MHz) and it all works just fine. I could also have had the key/remote cut to match my existing keys and then programmed the car to accept the new key, but I was quite happy to keep using the original keys and just use the new gizmo as a separate remote. I hacksawed the key shaft off it to make it more compact on the keyring. Total cost to me was about $105 - about $60 for the receiver box, and $45 for the remote. Happy camper!

And the main point here is that it's quite OK to use either variant of the receiver box on any age Prado - just make sure that the remotes work at the matching frequency. Earlier boxes work at 304 MHz, later ones (after about 2004) at 433.92 MHz.
