  • Minor electrical issues, demist & diff lock indicator light

Hey guys, was wondering if anyone could offer any help or suggestions before I go see an auto leccy...
i have a couple of minor electrical issues with my 120...

    1) the demist just does not work. The indicator light comes on when I press the button but the elements do not heat. I've got a mate of mine with a 120 as well and switched out the relay in the fuse box in the engine bay, to no avail. His definitely works so it's not that.

    2) the indicator light in my instrument panel for the diff lock doesn't light up. It's definitely engaging the lock, but the light does not come on. I've had a look through the "overhaul" of the instrument panel in the service manual, and it basically requires me to completely dismantle the inside of the car. Any alternative suggestions would be appreciated.

    thanks
    I'm still a dirt n00b, but I'll get there

Have you checked the demister fuse?
Probably a blown globe in the CDL light. Will most likely need to pull the instrument panel out to replace.

Hey Piggy, I've had a look in the fuse box in the engine bay, and there's a relay, no fuse as long as I can tell. This is the relay I swapped out with my friend. His relay works in his car, but not in mine, so I'm guessing it's not that... possibly a line fault somewhere btw the switch and the actual demister.

As for the light, I'm HOPING that it's just a bulb I need to replace, but again I'm not holding my breath.
Problem is, like I said checked the service manual, and I literally need to pull out almost the entire guts of the inside of the car, before I can even get anywhere near pulling out the instrument cluster.

      P.S. What is CDL?

The rear screen demister is easily damaged, yo only need to scratch a track on the glass and that's that.

I would suggest you check for 12V on the connections to the rear screen when the demister is turned on, if you have 12V present then its most likely a track is damaged.

Carefully check the printed track and see if you can find the break, if you can see the problem then there are kits available to repair the track but as I haven't used one I don't know how successful they would be. They usually say easy DIY repair but for this sort of thing I would check your local detailing mobs or windscreen repairers and see if they can point you to someone who knows what their doing.

IF the demister is faulty and can't be repaired only option is a new screen.

The instrument cluster is not that involved to get out, just remove the trims etc, being careful that you have removed all the screws etc, plugs, undo undo the bolts holding cluster plugs and remove. Hardest thing I have found is getting the dame plugs on the cluster in and out.

Faults in the cluster are common but I would check that light indication voltage is getting as close to the cluster as possible before pulling it out.

I'll second that - I spent quite a bit of time chasing a wire to the instrument cluster and then stuffed it I could pry the plugs out on the back and ended up giving up!!

          Any tips Leigh?

p.s the facia for the cluster has two plastic screw/clips on the top side and a couple of retainer clips on the bottom side and not that hard to get out..
          Cheers

All I can add is it helps to have small hands From memory I think it is the retainer clips that are a pain, you have to make sure there pressed fully and the plugs will come out.

I'm pretty sure I know what you're talking about... but how do I trace the fault in the first place? I am what one might refer to as a mechanical numpty, so wouldn't even know where to start.
                Suggestions?

tbh I haven't even gone through and checked ALL my fuses... someone suggested it could be that.

                  Hi,

If you have no electrical knowledge you would be better off leaving it to an auto electrician, he will look at the wiring diagram for the car and determine where he can check to see if voltage is being applied to light in the cluster, the wire may go through a couple of plugs etc. By doing this he should be able to determine if the fault is in or out of the instrument panel.

                  Cheers

the other way you can check is get underneath the car and see if you can find the switch that turns the light on. The plug in the switch may have come out or could be damaged etc. If you find it and its all plugged in etc, just get some wire and bridge the 2 pins out and see if the light on the dash comes on. If it does the switch could be faulty or there could be an internal fault in the transfer box. but i highly doubt it.

That should get you started anyway

                    Cheers Joel

                        Hey thanks Joel, that's helpful...
Where on Earth did you get that wiring diagram?
I recently purchased a copy of the service manual online (quite cheap) and it's nowhere near as good looking as that.

Considering that you had issues with your shifter and have been pulling the center console apart, perhaps you have touched some of the wiring under there?

When i go down into the guts under the panels, I don't remember any wiring under there for the CDL shifter... I'll have another look though.
                              Thanks.
