  • newby + HF Autotune aerial mounting experience

    Hi all,

I have recently moved to the "dark side" by acquiring a new 2007 D4D VX - yes it took me about 14 weeks to get it but worth the wait. 5 months old and going great. Have had various Rover products for years (22 in fact) but decided to try something different.

I am hoping that I can benefit from your collective wisdom and experience on fitting Autotune HF aerials to the back of the car.

(I admit to having tried to search the threads but without success - probably user error but..........)

2 main issues, Can't seem to find a bracket to suit (had one on my disco but it does not fit) and where did people run the wiring to get to aerials mounted on the rear.

Doing a trip across the Simpson in July 2008 and starting to prepare car.

    Many thanks in anticipation.

    cheers

    Richard

Hi, I have a bracket that mounts to the spare wheel holder. It uses the four bolts and runs around to the right (as you look at the back window).
Now the bad news is I don't know who makes them as I got mine second hand, but the good news is they are out the somewhere!

I remember hearing about someone in SA making them or your could try Terlin (http://www.outbacker.biz/) in Perth.

The guy I got mine from just ran the wiring between the door and the body as his was not going to be a permanent option.

Drew has a similar setup for an amateur radio antenna but you could use his wiring ideas.

      Thanks for the tips.

Am awaiting on an order through Melbourne based HF/UHF "shop" who tells me he can get a bracket.

      Then will tackle the wiring.

            Looks the goods!

Good to finally find a manufactor for this sort of mount.

How are you going to run the wiring for it??

Still pondering how to do mine.

Well thats the unfortunate bit on the last vehicle and this one it will have to be a hole through the door behind the wheel mount. Some form of microwave or bluetooth to the antenna would be good but I havent see one yet

I guess its a matter of how permanant you want it. The guy I got my bracket from just ran the wires between the door and the vehicle body.

Drew has some photos of how he did his amateur setup.

                Might be some ideas there.

Some food for thought there may be able to run across from behind the spare to behind the number plate at least the hole would be hidden.
It would have been easier to install the ic7000 with the at7000 tuner and a whip but VKS / AMCA wont accept amateur gear on there frequencies anyway no selcall on IC7000.

Well there's a whole new can of worms to open when you start getting into what you can and can't use and who is going to know etc..

But you are right about no selcall or beacon calls.

But do you mean the AH4 tuner? Thats what i used with IC7000. Works well but has got lots wires associated with it.

There is a mod for the Codan antenna to run with the 7000 so I might go that way.

                      Hi Strahan & Pradogxlv6

The tuner is the LDG AT-7000 interfaces straight to the radio in fact any radio that can use the AH 3 & 4 tuners. You can read about it http://www.ldgelectronics.com/products. ... &pID=5&v=1
It can be mounted next to the radio and coax run out to a whip antenna.

The rear mount was made by CJ4WD who trades as Puppy Bars and makes cages and barriers for dogs http://www.users.bigpond.com/cj4wd/puppy/contact.htm

                        Looks good! nice and small.

There were issues with some tuners frying the IC7000, don't know if this was one of them though. .

I hope its not as I might have to have a look one! Will have a look on eHam at the reviews and see if its there.

Do you have one as well as the Codan?

I use the AT7000 with the IC7000 at home on a dipole and the codan in the Prado
