Speedometer is being difficult

I have a disagreement going on with the speedometer in my 2004 GXL.

When the vehicle first starts after a decent period of being off, the speedometer will bounce a few mm's (and sometimes the tachometer). The fuel gauge and tachometer work while driving but the speedometer does not. Cruise control can be set and maintained.

There are no lights showing on the panel. I have checked and cleaned all the sensors, and had a mechanic friend confirm the sensors were in working order.

There is nothing else that is indicating what the cause may be, which hopefully means it is localised to the instrument cluster.

So prior to me having to bite the bullet and spend some coin for someone else to look at it, does anyone have an idea of what I may have missed in diagnosing this issue?

Its not uncommon for the cluster to play up, take it to a speedo repairer.

Never heard of a cluster playing up. I would find someone with techstream or a decent code reader that can do live tests. Check all the sensors (ABS/Speed ) etc. for a fault first.

There were several posts regarding faulty tachos, speedos, fuel and temperature gauges, many had had these repaired by speedo repairers who
also stated it was a common problem, these seem to be mostly caused by dry joints on the PCB. I have tried the search engine, and also trolled
back through the electrical section etc and now can't find anything, there also appears to be a lot less entries now than there used to be with the old BBS.

Glad (not really) you experienced the same. I searched both on the forum and through google, along with trolling the first load of pages of the electrical section to try and find a thread on this but came across not much at all.

Yeah, I'm actually working on this one. I'm now one step above I know someone, who knows someone else, and their cousin..

Anyway, cheers for the replies. Might pull out the instrument cluster this week or next and see if I can see any dry joints on the PCB.
