  • 3 battery install

Hey everyone, I’ve posted most if not all of the following into my Simpson Desert trip planning and preparation post, thought I’d also throw it in here for some extra knowledge sharing.

My background, was an apprentice sparky back in ‘91, have mainly worked in industrial and household wiring, not too much in the automotive 12VDC world.

I enjoy tinkering, don’t enjoy letting the green steam out of any electrical components when I make a mistake..!

Anyway, I’ve finally finished wiring up my 3 batteries in my 2004 120 V6, and am pretty chuffed with the end result.

The proof of course is always in the pudding. My original install in the engine bay was the Ctek D250S dc-dc with solar input. Aux battery was a Yellowtop optima 75Ah.

This setup and battery lasted until recently from 2012, so the yellowtop and Ctek did very well under the bonnet over a lot of hot and rough kms.

Ctek is still where it was installed originally, had to change the yellowtop out for an Exide 97Ah, also recently replacing the start battery with an Amaron.

My recent addition was a 100Ah lithium iron phosphate battery and Battery Management System from EV Power. Australian company, Rod very knowledgeable and very helpful.

Not cheap, but anything fairly new and as good as the LFP batteries including the BMS are worth it.

An auto electrical company did most of the install for me, from the original Ctek in 2012 to the new Redarc LFP 1225 system, so I can’t claim all of the credit, however, I’ve done my bit and can safely say I did about 15% of the overall install, some cleaning up of the bits and pieces because I’m anal retentive in most respects when it comes to all things electrical from 440AC down to 12VDC.

Some photos of the overall install, enjoy...!

I hope that the fridge and battery in the back are well tied down. If not the Simpson will see them airborn and do untold damage, not to mention a sudden stop or accident. Use the seat belt and seat mounts and propped restraining straps or get hold of old lap seatbelts.

Yep, everything will get strapped down safely, thanks 404pug. Everything has pretty much come together before the Simmo trip, lucky to, less than 4 weeks to go before we’re off..!

The attached photo is of the water bladder filled up and checked for leaks.

All survived intact thanks, everything and everyone went through some hectic tracks, so a pretty decent torture test

Lithium batt had a teething issue first day, BMS turned it off due to 1 cell unbalance after approx 4 hrs of charge, from memory it was at around 13.75 Vdc

Turned off Redarc, kept 35 ltr fridge at -3 for 4 days, fairly often use

After complete batt drain - 12.10Vdc, BMS switched everything off

After breaker reset, full charge in approx 4-6 hrs, nil issue on the trip thereafter, thankfully
