  • Fuel gauge problem..

Hey guys, new prado owner here and loving it so far. 06 diesel auto gxl with 174xxx kms. Just the one problem so far. My fuel guage is all over the place. I have not tried filling both tanks yet, so only on the main tank (90ltr light is on). When I got it, it was reading near empty. Next time I drive it, it says 1/4 tank. Put about 30ltrs in, reads 3/4. Stop somewhere, restart, reads 1/2. Next time reads 1/4.... then full....aaaand back to empty...all within around 20kms of driving.

I have done a night of searching the forum and all I could come up with is checking for damaged wires to sender under the rear passenger side seat, and ensuring the battery has a good ground to the body. Have done both, wires are good and battery earthed well.
Has anyone had the same problem and found a fix? Not sure if I should drop the tank and install a new sender. I imagine it being a painful exercise..
    Thanks, Ash

Try turning the ignition on see what it reads, turn off and back on a few times see if it gives the same reading or varies, if it varies
the problem is more likely to be in the gauge than the sender.

Thanks, I have tried that and it stays the same. But it changes when left for longer... it was on 1/4 today, so I rocked the car side to side for a bit and it all of a sudden jumped down to empty while the ignition was on..... looking like a sender... although sometimes it reads full. Don't know how it gets up there while sitting.

        Hello all

I own a 2009 Prado 120, and I am experiencing exactly this very same issue.
As I am in East Timor and mechanical shops are not exactly first class, does anyone know how to troubleshoot this?
I has both tanks removed last year because some small stones got in between the rear tank and the metal protection and the continuous rubbing resulted in some minute perforations that leaked fuel.
I "handy man" mechanic disassembled the tanks, welded the holes and reassembled everything together. I don't know if there is any relation to this event, but since a couple of months ago, the fuel gauge started acting as described above.

Where should I start to look for the problem?

        Thank you

Similar here. 1/2 then 1/4 then 1/2 etc reading within a few days and only 5kms driving
120 Series Petrol with the dual tanks
I have replaced both tank sender units
I have checked the connector to the sender unit (under rear left seat)
Just the other week I replaced the combination instrumentation meter.
I suppose it could be another faulty meter. (Was from wreckers not new).
I have heard that you can get them shipped to a specialist to check.

Sorry not much help to you but If I find the answer ill post.

            Hi guys,

I have the exact same problem in the 2004 Prado 120 that I just bought, and it's not easy to find an auto-electrician in my area. Can one of you help me find the connectors for the fuel sender? I've looked through 2 different service manuals and seen a drawing of where they should be (connectors F21, F22, F23 and F24 and junction boxes J30 and J31) but I still cant find them when I look at my car! A few people posted photos on this forum a decade ago but the photos don't appear anymore :-(
