  • Dual battery in car plus battery in trailer set up

    Morning all,

I’ve got a 2004 petrol prado with a dual battery set up I put in a few years ago. Got a Redarc isolator and also running the alternator booster from Leigh. I’ve recently bought a trailer for camping to store all our crap and am looking to move the fridge from the back of the car into a drawbar toolbox.

I’ve got power running to a 12v connector in the back I currently use for the fridge, so was going to extend this cable to an Anderson connector. Going to purchase a second battery for the trailer to install in the toolbox. I also currently have 160w solar with a MPPT regulator which I’ve used to charge the car battery when camping. The MPPT is on the back of the panels.

It seems that you can spend a lot of $ on staff I’m not sure I need. So my questions are:
    - Do I need a dc dc charger in the trailer? I’m running 8ga cable currently.
    - I’m assuming I don’t need another battery isolator in the trailer, as when the trailer is coupled up and the Anderson plug connected the two batteries will equalise in voltage.
    - Do I need a battery box or can I just mount the trailer battery straight in the toolbox.
    - When I connect the solar to the battery in the trailer then this will also reverse charge the main dual battery as well (althogh will be a voltage drop through cable).
    - The fridge already had low voltage cut out, so I don’t need this standalone option.

    Anything else I should consider?

    Cheers,

    Tom

If you are referring to 8mm2 wire is way to small, you would need at least 13mm2 or preferably around 25mm2 with either you shouldn't need the DCDC
as long as you don't have any large loads connect to the battery while its charging. You wire the trailer battery on its own feed ie directly from the isolator.
If you daisy chain off the car aux when its low and pulling a lot of current it will slow the charging of the trailer battery. You can mount the battery where
as long as the terminals can't get shorted and its secure. IF the isolator is two way yes connecting the solar to the trailer battery will also charge the car aux.
