  • What is this lead?

    Hi guys,

New to 4wd'ing and have bought a 2006 Grande. Just before Xmas the family and I went up to Kenilworth, and limbed home on the bump stops (to Brissy). Turns out the airbags in the car were original. Since I was replacing them, I got a 2 inch lift done at the same time (by a specialist company). On the way home (after 5pm so specialist store closed) I tried out low-neutral-high for the air suspension. This triggered the following lights to come on and stay on, after going to the high position: TRAC VSC, VSC OFF, SKID (? just guessing the last one's name, but it is a pic of a car which looks like it is skidding). I don't have a OBD scanner, don't even know if I am OBD or OBD2. I had to use the "shift" button to get out of park, to get home, but it does not always lock the car into park when the warning lights are on.

I was able to find this site, pulled the brake switch out (from near the brake pedal), and opened it up. Went to clean it, and it burnt my finger thru the cloth, so I figured that the unit was a bust and that it was probably a coincidence. I rang my mate's misses who was still at work, and was able to get a new one. Put it in, all was okay for about 30 minutes of driving, then the lights came back on again. The lights go away when I cycle the ignition off.

So read this forum again, and found a "could be a wire" theme. Makes sense that a wire might have stretched, so I went and had a look, and found the following cable (maybe a sensor?) [see attached pics] was just floating around, but even after putting it back in place (using a ziptie) the lights still come on after driving the vehicle.

The attached pics are from the right rear wheel arch. There is also one in the left rear. Is it a sensor? If this is not the part you think is at fault, please let me know.

NOTE: currently in lockdown, and because of the time of year, most mechanical workshops seemed to be closed. Also I have no hoist, nor any way to lift the vehicle, but I can slide under, laying on my back. Getting worried as I was hoping to go camping next week.

Im not 100% sure, but Im taking a guess its part of the rear air bags set up in the grande models.

is there a plug on the otehr side also?

Yes there is, both sides at the back have it, non in the front. I guess you are saying that it is the ride height sensor? (if so I guess it cannot effect the TRC VSC, VSC OFF and SLIP dash lights).

The Circled plug is for the Grande OEM shocks, not sensors. These are typically adjusted by the Comfort/Normal/Sport dial on the console which activates the actuators on the Grande Shocks. This is separate to the Height Sensors in the rear.

Thanks. I have had that disconnected (so I was told) when I had the 2 inch kit installed. Glad to know what it is though, as I won't bother replacing the plastic holder that mounts it to the chassis. I will just leave it in place with the cable tie.

An update on the warning lights: A funny thing happened. I came to the conclusion that, if the brake switch was so hot, it had to be some sort of short (I am not an electrician), so went over every cable, thinking it was the lift kit stretching a cable. No faults found anywhere (that I could get access to by laying underneath). Then I read on one of the posts here that I should also check the plug that goes into the master cylinder. Went to pop the bonnet, low and behold, there was a screw sitting in the little bay that the cable pull comes to in the drivers side of the Prado. The screw appears to have never been used (no marks on it whatsoever, except ... 2 little burn marks). The only thing I can think of is someone, at some point before I bought the vehicle, installed something under the dash and left an extra screw behind. Maybe when I moved the air suspension to high it jiggled it loose, and it fell onto the circuit, or crossed two wires, and then sat there until I had a little nutter and slammed the door, possibly saying a few unmentionable words, making the screw drop out. This happened on Monday 11th. Went away (Ocean Beach at Bribie) on Tuesday, the dash lights were back to normal. Went up the beach, and the inland track, plus the highway up and back, still no more warning lights. I seriously was convinced by Sunday night that it was going to be a $3,000 job, turns out it was a 10cent screw.

Must admit, I have learnt a lot over the last weekend. Thanks guys (and to everyone of the other posts I have read). I love this forum.
