  • Moving Secondary Battery to the Rear

    Hi,

I recently purchased a 2007 Prado Diesel. I am in the process of setting it up for camping and adding a few things here and there.
It came fitted with a Dual battery system with a 55Ah Battery mounted at the rear of the engine bay (passenger side) with the battery controller and AUX fuse board nearby. Now I want to increase the size of the battery and install a deep cycle battery to help run my Waeco CFX65 for longer. Roughly measuring the battery tray I think there’s max 300mm to play with which is small judging by battery sizes 100ah+.

Is there anything decent that will fit in the tray or should I relocate the battery to the rear of the vehicle?

If I moved it could I leave the controller and fuse board in place under the bonnet and just run a 6 B&S cable fused from the rear battery to supply the controller etc?

    Thanks in advance,
    Jake

My aux is mounted on the other guard where the cranking battery would be installed in a left hand drive unit.

Does that allow for a bigger battery tray in that area or is it very similar in terms of space?

Century deep cycle p/n 145107, 82ah, fits in that tray and within the 21kg weight limit too.

Had a 100Ah on the drivers side for years without an issue, you need a good battery tray though, now have a Lithium fitted there.

If I fit an AGM battery in the rear do you know if can leave the auxiliary fuse box and controller under the bonnet and run a wire from that rear battery to supply? Save a massive rewire.

Shouldnt charge a AGM from an alternator, should really use a dcdc. Also shouldnt mount a lead acid inside cab.

Try this under bonnet battery tray from Off-road Downunder. I bought mine from there & fitted it myself. Damn it’s well made & worth every cent. Alternatively you can buy slimline battery trays from them to go behind the rear seat.

Thanks for the replies guys. Went with the 82ah battery in the same spot as I was pushed for time with a last minute camping trip and a dead second battery (good job I did a trial run with the new fridge).
