Finally changed my filter today. Decided to pull the old one apart to have a look and see how much crud was on the inside, after 210000 km. Carefully ground around the rolled edge until the top was able to come off. You can see the amount of fine grains on the paper. Easy job to unclip the plastic clips on the fuel lines, press the tabs on the back and with a small screw driver lever the top up.

Just changed mine this arvo,I think I will take to work and have a look on inside
When I asked at Cleveland Toyota the sales didn't know what I was on about!
so I bought online. My Prado is almost 3 years old and I think was original filter.
            30 minute job.

Thanks to those people on this forum that took the time to explain where and how to change out this little filter and with pics too, great job. Too bad the filter is in such a crap spot behind the tail shaft and I had to take off the front fuel tank guard to get to it (2011 GX 150 series).

I finally found mine today and after water blasting out half of a Pilbara red dust hill around it, it was too late to change it out due to fading light. But now I know how to change the little sucker without breaking the clips which is what I will do in the morning. I am using a Ryco filter which I paid about $40 for.

So far this forum has been a considerable help in my endeavors as to try and do a few things to the car myself.

Thanks so much for this info everyone, particularly for the part numbers SWR.
I have ordered the complete filter set from Ozie spares, hopefully it wont take too long.

                  Hi Guys
I know this is a bit late but
Trying to replace this fuel filter
Everyone is saying it takes 15 to 30 minutes - HOW
Does the rear tail shaft need to be removed?
They seams to be no room to get your hands onto the filter if you leave shaft in

First drop the filter bracket off the chassis, then you can pull it down to get at those pesky clips.

I've replaced the filter a number of times and it doesn't take long. I put the car up on some small ramps, just one side is enough, and can easily get around any components including the tale shaft.
There are some good step by step instructions on this forum, just have to search for them.

                        Hi Guys
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly
                        Here is what I did
Jack up Passenger Rear side of car so back wheel is just touching the ground, this gives you more clearance between the tail shaft and the filter.
Remove both bolts that hold filter housing to car body
Remove 8mm bolt that holds housing to filter body
This part is important HOLD TONGUE ON LEFT HAND SIDE OF MOUTH THEN CAREFULLY REMOVE THOSE LITTLE CLIPS
Remove fuel lines as described elsewhere in this thread
                        Reassemble the unit
                        Lower car back on ground
                        Greg

Toyota make two under body filters as the one for the 150 D4D has a higher flow rate, filters look identical.
The aftermarket companies just upped their specs to meet the 150, only Toyota could confuse the issue with two identical looking parts.
When the 150 was released they changed the under body filter schedule to 20,000 and for some crazy reason left the under bonnet filter till the light comes on.
At this point fuel is or is about to bypass the filter, really clever Mr T.
I use Terrain Tamer filters and do under bonnet every second service along with the under body one.
These kits come with every filter oil, air 2x fuel and cabin plus sump plug washer and 50ml Flashlube.
This gives me plenty of spares for trips away.
I have no connection with Terrain Tamer just over 900,000 Kms proof of the product with three 4wds.

I assumed this filter filtered fuel between the tanks, but no. Looking at the toyota repair manual diagram its actually located between the pump and the jet pump, meaning its continuously filtering the fuel in the main tank whenever its running which is controlled by the ecm. Contrary to what some have said this is all that this pump does.

I'm about to do my underbody filter, and found this great video: https://youtu.be/2X_X79FyZaQ. Hope it helps someone else.

I have noticed my 120 KD (2007 diesel) splutters sometimes when on the last of the second tank, this might be pump related (or pickup?), however the filter is the first and easiest step for me to investigate.

I also noticed my a/c stopped blowing cold air today.. coincidence after spluttering? I've tried swapping the fog light relay with the A/C one, but no change, will deal with that one later on.. gotta love cars!

OK, filter went in easily, you don't even need to jack up the car and it's accessible (10mm socket is all you need, check the video to see how the plastic clips work they can be undone with fingers). The diesel looked pretty clean coming out the old filter, old one is branded coopers (new one is ryco).

Now to work out the A/C, it actually turned on cold just now when I started the car up now.. but on the way home from work this afternoon it did that then went hot.. any tips guys? The A/C light on the interior switch does not blink, which looks to be a sign from other posts, it stays solid..

*edit: a/c turned off due to engine getting too hot.. looking into this now, somethings gone as it never got anywhere near hot on 40d c days to date..
