  • MAF Sensor Cleaning

How do you people clean the MAF sensor? I know Toyota say to hit it with a jet of compressed air for umpteen seconds. Given that it has air passing over it all the time, I doubt that compressed air is going to remove any crud on it. Do you clean the sensor in situ?

    Thanks Glenn

Remove the MAF sensor ( 2 screws ) then spray it with some MAF cleaner that is available at most auto stores.

Reminds me I must do mine again.

    Cheers Andrew

When I think of it I will look at it after a big off road trip or if sucking in dust in a convoy. It seems to make a big difference to economy, so if you think economy is getting worse it might be worth a look.

          Cheers Andrew

Just to add to the value of doing this, I gave mine a clean recently and dropped by .5 l per 100k. No idea when it was last cleaned, as I bought the car with 80k on it. the intake side was totally black.

since i bought can of the above cleaner for SCA for about $17.00 I think i have a life time supply! might as well give it another squirt its been 10k since the last one.

Has anyone got a photo of where to find this sensor? Is it both a 1kz and a d4d thing?
              Cheers, Josh

There are some wires going into the top of air filter box where the MAF is, remove the 2 screws and pull it out. The probe is around 2 inches long. The V6's have them as well.

If you search there are photos posted, I know chippy posted some years ago.

                Cheers Andrew

Picked up a can from Auto barn today for $24.00. Give it a try just before I fill the tank and see if the economy changes.

Did mine this morning and once dry and re installed have noticed it idles quieter/smoother. Found my sensor (wire) covered in muck. I suspect it was from the oil in the Uni Filter snorkel sock. All clean now and off on a road trip for a few days up the Dampier Peninsula. Will see if it improves economy.
