As the sign they use on Q.I. says: "Nobody Knows!"
Only the engine designer might be able to tell you the design limits for EGT, but seeing as it's an alloy head (so I recommend coolant temps below 100c as well) I would err on the side of caution. Personally I have the EGT alarm at 720c and change down or back off when it sounds. I have seen a 790c peak, and it is a time thing as well, ie pistons etc held at temp x for time y will at some point suffer terminal stress or meltdown. It is intriguing to see what pushes up the EGTs, obviously flat foot heading for redline will do it, but due to the turbo spooling up as the loud pedal goes down it will get up surprisingly quickly on a slight uphill in 5th, particularly with the cruise control on. I can't see how a blanking plate would affect it much, it only stops blowby gases from being fed back into the intake and in a decent engine there shouldn't be that much.

Thanks for the tips t303, I am now considering leaving the standard exhaust and installing the EGT as you recommend above to monitor the temps. With careful driving and throttle management it should be manageable to avoid any issues. Just out of interest what would the lows and highs be for ETG readings upstream of the Turbo for a Prado? Would EGR blanking affect this?

An update. Turns out the MAF needed cleaning. Back together and hauling butt. Sweet.

Don't think Safari support them anymore, the last of them would be well out of warranty now I would think (was it 5yrs)
Maybe worth a call to them though, you might get lucky.
I don't think mines quite right either, still goes very well but occasionally I get surging under acceleration in low speed/high gear. Never happens when I unplug the unit although it's so intermittent I'm not 100% sure.

Could my Dtronic be playing up
Hey
1kzte with 2.75" beaudesert exhaust, dtronic in good nick.
Just recently it began running rough at idle and not pulling like it should. Figured at 220k its time for some new injectors and replace the glow plugs. Fuel filter is sweet.
But, tonight I thought I might pull the dtronic and take that out of the equation.
It runs fine without the chip.
Could the dtronic be faulty and if so how would you check it?
Does safari still support them? Couldnt see anything on their website but on iphone so a bit hard to read.
Thoughts?
Advice?
