  • Engine Stall

    Hi All,

Over the last six months or so, I have had the engine in my 2009 120 series stall.

First time it happened I was going up the multi level car park at Brisbane domestic airport and the second time a couple of months later driving along at 110kph on the Bruce Highway on my way to the airport.

The Prado hasn't done it for a while but did it today, twice. We left Melbourne early this morning as we are heading back home to the Sunshine Coast and covered 1,000 klms.

The problem is that the engine seems to retard, loses power and stalls. I simply put into neutral, restart, put it back into drive and continue. No gauges spike or go haywire. The car starts immediately and continues on as if nothing has happened.

The other thing that happens is when idling at lights and I take off sometimes the car won't accelerate, even if I put my foot flat and then a few seconds later it will take off. Feels the same as problem above only difference is it doesn't stall.

Can anyone give me some pointers of what to start looking at?

It's just had a 120k service ( odometer now 124k) and has always been serviced by Toyota.

Replace the suction control valve on the fuel pump.

From what you so describe, this is the most likely & only fault that causes this. I'm 99% sure a new Scv will fix it.

      Thanks #######.

I'm heading off interstate for business during the week so won't get a chance before I go. Will book it in to be checked out and replaced.

        Hi,

Well unfortunately it looks as though I have joined the 2008 D4D engine stalling brotherhood. First occurrence 2 weeks ago. Drove from Brissie down to the Gold Coast, stopped for about 5 minutes, started up OK, idled for about 30 seconds then stalled. It took a couple of lengthy turning over attempts to get it running and all then all good. This has now happened 3 or 4 times after highway driving trips and I thought that was the common denominator until this evening after a short trip the vehicle sat for an hour, then started and stalled. The vehicle just recently had the 160K service, new fuel filters (I run a fuel manager secondary as well) plus a can of Wynns EGR4 down the inlet throat. I haven't check oil pick up screen blockage or Scv's but if there's anyone else out there with a known fix it would be very muck appreciated

            Hi #############,

I've sent you a PM re the SCV. Are they easy to replace and what are the costs? When do you think you'll be coming through to Brisbane?

Had the SCV replaced in an attempt to fix the stalling issue. No good. Picked it up this morning, drove about 30 klm, stopped for about 30 minutes, restarted in Park and before I could do anything it stalled. A couple of attempts to get it started, drove around the block, parked again for about an hour, this time I managed to get it into reverse to back out and after about 2 feet it stalled again. So it isn't the SCV. Anyone else have any recommendations?

Has it got any check engine lights on? I would get it plugged into a computer to read live data. You gotta see why it's stalling when it does it. It could still be the SCV, you do occasionally get a dead one out of the box. Without more info we would all only be guessing......

Sorry to hear it didn't fix your problem. Very unusual.
Might have to get an expert to look at it.

If you can't find an expert

                      Try:

Back to basics, fuel filters blocked?
Make sure your battery is good, starter & charging system ok.
Check fuel pressure, it should be 32000kpa at cranking.

But if Its starting, the above should be ok.

                      Check air filter.
Check egr & throttle valve operation.
                      If ok.

Detailed fuel pressure & injection volume testing.
                      If ok

                      Check compression.
                      Active test, cylinder cut.
                      Depending on results.
                      replace injectors
                      Injector driver
                      Fuel pump
                      Fuel lines
                      Sensors or sorts
It could be anything, many more to choose from.

So how old are your injectors?

Injectors original but checked a week ago and all in spec. Rail pressures and all that other techo stuff checked during the diesel service and all OK
Batteries all new, air filter new

Stalling only appears to occur after a lengthy trip. I can drive to and from work for a couple of weeks and then if I do a drive of about an hour + then it happens after the vehicle has been sitting for a little bit. It "feels" like the engine is fuel starved but that is only a guess

A trip up to Fraser doing some heavy duty sand driving (Ngkala Rocks) saw the stalling issue occurring after every stop and restart. I did a bit more research and found a thread on the Toyota Owner Club forum where a guy changed out his non-genuine fuel filter with a Toyota genuine filter. My mechanic had installed a Bosch fuel filter during the last service and the stalling issue started a couple of days later (coincidence?). When I mention the filter theory to him he said that the Bosch were top shelf and he couldn't see how they could cause the problem. Anyway, I was sick of the stalling issue so out with the Bosch and in with the genuine. Well, getting close to 2000 klm since the filter change out and no stall. Not even a hint of stalling. Some heavy duty sand driving across the Simpson later this year will be the final test but - so far so good!!

Wow, I would of thought a Bosch fuel filter would of been ok too. I guess that's just another reason to always go genuine, I know we do at work unless the customer specifies otherwise.

You say that as though it's a statement that because of the fact your car has been serviced by Toyota that everything should be rosie. Unfortunately, that is not so.
