I had fuel filter light come on at 80,000, just east of Eucla, log book said contact dealer (great) luckily I had phone service.
Was informed filter needed replacing, first I knew that it wasn't part of service, relaced with a Ryco one.
Since then once out of warranty used Terrain Tamer filters doing own services never had a problem since.
As complete kit has everything I probably change fuel filter more often than needed (every second service keeping one for spare) but better safe than sorry.
Note: I have nothing to do with Terrain Tamer just appreciate a good product.

It's a good idea to replace the under bonnet one within every 40,000k.
Also everybody travelling should learn how to change it & carry a spare incase that happens, it does happen a bit.
Or, have it changed before a big trip.
There have been various issues around with aftermarket fuel filters, I have never had a problem using ryco.

It is a bit coincidental that the stalling issue commenced straight after a service where the fuel filter was replaced with a Bosch. I know there are other threads on PP dealing with 1KD engines stalling but no definite fixes - only recommendations (which is OK). As stated earlier I have replaced the Bosch with a Toyota genuine filter and for the moment (2000 klm later) the stalling issue has not raised its ugly head. There are bound to be other 1KD owners experiencing engine stalls after a long or hard drive and I would be very interested to hear if their issue disappear with the install of a genuine Toyota fuel filter

This is interesting . I have a 09 D4D which has just clocked 200,000 km . I bought it with 145,000 km on it so don`t know if it has had injectors replaced previously . Had the injectors checked at about 175,000km and they said they were ok . Just got back from a camping trip with my son driving on his L plates . After driving for a bit over an hour , slowing down through a round about in a country town my son goes into panic mode as the car won`t turn . ( Engine had cut out ) Swapped drivers , it started fine and ran fine , tried several situations to mimic previous problem also . Stopped at a set of lights 2 hours later , it was idling fine till the lights changed and it cut out again . Started it and it would hardly go for the next 50m . Just made it through the intersection when the lights turned red again . It cleared then ran ok .I`ll change fuel filters and clean the air flow censor today . But if anyone else has ideas id appreciate them .

Can I ask where the SCV on the fuel pump is ? Is it inside the tank ? I`ve also just read a lot about EGR problems and cleaning inlet manifolds etc . Is this more related to the D4D or earlier diesel . Is there info on this site re cleaning etc and fitting an SCV . Bit of a computer newbie here .

Edit , I`ve had more of a look and it seems it`s on the back of the pump on the left side of the motor , looks like 2 electrical plugs on the back of the pump . Is it the one closest to the block or the one on the passenger side ?

Hi Guys, not sure if anyone is still having this problem . My 2007 d4d starting stalling around 2 months ago ,200000k on the clock , so I did the SCV part# 04226-30010 and didn't help . So I talked to my mechanic and he said after listening to the symptoms I had that it had to be air getting into the fuel some where. So I did a check of all three fuel filters , under body , under bonnet and after market Donaldson under bonnet , all seems ok . Then I noticed one of the fuel lines could be turned by hand on the Donaldson ferrule even after tightening it . So closer inspection I saw that these two fuel lines were Perished and had small cracks in them . These lines are, one from steel tank line to original filter and from original filter to the Donaldson , from Donaldson to fuel pump was a new line that I installed when I did the set up years ago , the other 2 lines were original ones. the size of this line is 3/8 if you are doing the job.
So what I think has been happening is say I drive 40min to Bunnings stop go for a shop 20min get in start it 10sec stall . the heat from the engine has heated the hoses allowing air in then cooled trapping a small amount of air enough to stall the engine? Anyway it seems to have worked and its a cheap fix , I hope other people can benefit from this , good luck, iam off to Bunnings.

My 120 just stopped couple of weeks ago at the lights in perth, no smoke no nothing, just stopped

Short story the filter/gauze on the fuel pump in my main tank had blocked up with crap and basically starved the engine of fuel.....btw i dropped both tanks, looked inside and they were both clean as a whistle fyi

Easy way to get to the fuel pump is remove rear left hand side passenger seat, 1 pita elect plug and a couple of Phillips head screws and remove the whole unit and check

i just replaced the entire fuel pump but you could simply replace the filter as it wouldnt be overly expensive me thinks

I replaced the SCV ages ago and the way we identified an issue was at idle the revs would hunt up and down slightly, a tell tale sign yr scv is due

                      Hope that helps

I have just had the same issue, however the 4WD stalled at lights (Auto Petrol) about a 1 km after I had troble starting the vehicle. The engine wouldn't turn over, no sound nothing, thought it may have been a flat battery, linked the dual battery and still the same. Then all of a sudden the vehicle started and all good until it stalled a couple of km's later. That was yesterday morning and no problems since. The problem is I don't think my issue would be petrol blockage as the vehicle would still turn over, but just not start. Any suggestions?
