  • Re: diesel rattle in D4D Prado

Been lurking for a while as I've been thinking about buying a D4D before the new model Prado arrives for 2010. On paper the D4D looks to be the best four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that Toyota has ever produced but reading this thread suggests otherwise. Is it a case of all the unhappy owners being out their stating their case while those who are happy just off enjoying their ride?

How about a quick poll on whether the D4D is good or bad?

As far as I am concerned the D4D, when it is running with good injectors, is a fine piece of engineering. I strongly believe that it was released in Australia before the current diesel being sold was of the required cetane level.

Have Toyota successfully fixed the problem in the latest releases? Well maybe it is too early to say until those cars have clocked up around 15-20 thousand kms. I am hoping that the new model injectors are doing the trick, I do not believe the ECU reflash does anything but detune the engine to make it like the Hi-Lux.

Mav have your injector issues been fixed? Have you had the reflash and injectors??

To be honest I haven't noticed much of a difference with the reflash... If there's a power drop it's very minimal. I'm looking forward to getting it back into Toyota for the second round of BS.

So far I've done around 300kms out of the said 1000kms and the engine noise is as bad as when I first got it back, so much for the engine re-learning... The BS thing is the car ran fine when new and all of a sudden the rattle comes and an ECU reflash is expected to fix the problem... It's obviously a band aid solution and one that is maybe designed to mask the noisy/damaged injectors. Not that this is the case with mine as it's actually made it much worse. I don't quite understand how re-flashing the ecu will magically repair the injectors or bring them back to their original running condition when there's obviously a problem with the physical state of the injectors.

Anyway I'll get off my soap box... It's just a topic that makes my blood boil! Only 18 months of my lease left so we'll see what happens... Might be a good chance to jump back into a V8 ute!

Crossed fingers, I haven't had any issues with mine so far after 1 yr and 28,000klm. Its a May Built 08 model.
The D4D isn't a new engine and has been around for a while in Europeon markets.
I would think that most manufacturers are having some degree of trouble with the common rail design due to the high fuel pressures these things run at.
My mate has a 1 1/2 yr old top of the line DiD Pajero, and you should here this thing at idle, let alone the noise in cabin down the freeway.
He's had a few engine flashes at service intervals, suposively to fix noise and fuel cunsumption, with no avail.
My Toyota sounds like well oiled Singer sewing machine in comparison, with a alot more grunt I should add.

It's also got to make you wonder why they slip the "optional" diesel fuel filter brochure in the new car manual and strongly urge you to consider installing it. Toyota were obviously aware there could be issues with the D4D and Australian diesel... Why the hell didn't they fit these from the factory? Hell if I knew it would prevent the issues I'm having now I would have paid to have installed! I wonder if the 08 forward models have this brochure slipped into their manuals too?

There is no doubt that having the failed injectors replaced does return the engine back to when it is new, the rattle disappears completely. However my engine has developed a rattle in its bottom end which is not related to a bad injector. When I had the first injector replaced my fuel consumption dropped from 13.5 l/100km back down to 9.4l/100kms. A similar fuel consumption drop happened when the second failed injector was replaced. What annoys me with this process that Toyota makes the dealerships go through is that they will not replace all the old model injectors with the new model ones hence those of us with the older model injectors will most likely go through this process 4 times. For me that means 4 trips to Adelaide from Alice Springs. The reflash does nothing to alter the rattle in my experience.

Rang the dealership about this optional diesel fuel filter - they dont know anything about it - can you supply some details please. If it saved the pain of what has been experienced by so many - I would fit it straight away.

wanting to buy a new prado grande diesel however after reading this site Iam confused as ever.
I did notice that nearly all engine related issues where on models 2007 and earlier,
Can anyone anyone tell me whether this problem has been resolved on 2008/9 models

Is the brochure that is being referred to the Common Rail information brochure that Toyota puts in all the CRD models informing the owner of the need to use good quality fuel in the CRD vehicles

The Brochure shows the Long life Fuel Filter used on the CRD Hilux but it is not encouraging owners to fit this filter to any other CRD vehicle as all the CRD Toyota range have Long life Fuel Filters of various designs fitted as standard

The Spin on Filter used on the CRD Prado is a long life filter as well (just a different design to the Hilux Filter shown) and does not need to be changed until the light comes on (the same as the hilux filter shown)

                        Regards Don

Our D4D is Sept 08 build. Now done 12000kms. It is running beautifully. Using the new Ultimate diesel, it is even quieter now than when brand new. The usual slight rattle when cold, under acceleration or climbing is virtually non-existent. Fuel economy is 10.4L/100kms (mainly hills and town driving so far). Couldn't be happier with the vehicle and I have followed this thread since we bought it. BP claims this fuel actually cleans injectors. I don't know whether to believe that but the engine certainly seems to rum better on it.

Based on my own experience so far, I would not hesitate to recommend the Prado D4D.

I've removed from my post.

Regarding the filter, the service manual seems to state changing them every 20,000kms. For instance in my book 40k, 60k, 80k etc services state change diesel filter.

The filter it is talking about changing on the CRD every 20,000 klms is the inline filter between the front & rear tanks not the spin on filter under the bonnet

If you look at the wording in the service book it say something along the lines of "Replace Fuel Filter on Diesel models with two fuel tanks"

If you are in NZ and only have a single tank model would you still change the spin on under the bonnet ?

The problem is that a lot of people are unaware of the inline between the tanks (some dealers included) so people replace the spin on one that doesn't need to & dont replace the inline one that should be done every 20k

                                Regards Don
