1KZ-TE blowing smoke on startup

  • 1KZ-TE blowing smoke on startup

    Hey guys

    Have a 2004 1kz-te that for a the last few months blows a heap of white smoke on cold starts (mornings usually) and runs rough for a 5 secs or so, after this it runs perfectly and starts without this issue happening,

    40k ago i did glow plugs, injectors, block egr , de grud manifold, water pump etc

    i have noticed some oily residue seeping from throttle body intake, so last service i pulled off inter cooler to check what was happening with how clean everything was staying after blocking egr.

    throttle intake was really clean so was happy about that but didn't notice anything else or why it would be seeping from there.

    have read a few others with similar problems and a few have suggested in something to do with oily residue sitting in turbo ? since blocking egr i have noticed a lot more smoke coming out the rear end which makes sense as its not being recirculated.

    any help would be greatly appreciated .

    I have the EXACT same issue with mine, I got no idea what it is and am also interested to see what other people have done to fix it

      I had a similar situation that turned out to be a weak battery of all things. Once the battery was replaced it started with half a crank and no more smoke. Try charging the battery and see if it makes a difference.

        Did either of you ever get to the bottom of this? I've been through the wringer over and over with this.

          Not sure about the 2004 model 1kz motor but i'm guessing you still need to glow the plugs for 5-10 seconds before starting (especially during Winter months)? I glow my old 1996 1kz for about 10 seconds and it starts with a half crank every time without fail. Even on frosty mornings! My starter battery is only a year old too which helps. I do wonder how many people don't know this and just turn the key and crank the engine till it starts...
