Re: Common Rail system and additives

Geez Mav, with the trouble you have had with your unit the rest of us should do the opposite of what you suggest! Kidding of course. No additives going in to mine.

Re: Common Rail system and additives

I have recently purchased a 08/08 build prado, was a bit more than I wanted to pay but after reading some of these forums, I decided to go for as late a build as I could afford to avoid any the possibility of injector issues

I looked at buying a 160k 07 build for cheap prado, but inspection report said "loud diesel knock apparent, gets less apparent as car warms, consult service agent." ( the car dealer said "every prado has a loud knock its not an issue", and count I the inspection report as money very well spent, as i was unable to look at the car myself )

My car has done 20,xxx kms im using 2 additives.

an oil additive and a fuel additive, these cost on average $15 each

the oil additive is supposed to enhance the temp that the oil can handle, and I figure the turbo should like that
the fuel additive is supposed to fix a lot of problems with australian diesel, and I figure that cant be bad

I plan on taking this car around oz, after making a few mods so I can go places in lots of comfort and in a car I can trust to not just get me there, but get me back out as well

I think that for the investment in the car, if it just gives you a small protection/benefit then it is money well spent

I do not think that there should be any warranty issues (IMO), toyota will need to prove that these common additives have damaged the engine, and as they use similar products .....

I have the same build as you. Chemtech diesel power seems to improve economey. It must really clean the injectors as after driving on a tank with it, the injectors are VERY rattly but settle down after running some straight diesel through after filling the tank.

On a recent 2000km trip, I got 11km/l on the way there with additive and 10km/l on the way back without.

I wouldn't be using any additives in a D4D. If your oil isn't up to the job use a different oil. As far as fuel additive, do you like playing Russian roulette?

Totally agree especialy with oil additives . A good quality oil has the additives in them to do their job sufficiently , if the oil needed them fancy fandango stuff added to it I am sure the oil companies highly paid R & D department would do plenty of research on all the additives out their to see if it is benificial to add to their product . What your adding to the oil may allready have the same stuff in it .

Geez, I remember when I was a little younger we got this 170 super pursuit motor in an XP Falcon and thought we would see if we could kill it by draining the oil and then revving the guts out of it.

It refused to die, even after getting a real hiding with some enormous valve bouncing burnouts and clutch dropping but all to no avail. It finally popped when it was redlined for a good half hour or so with no water or oil!

Even now most manufacturers have dropped the initial 1,000 and 5,000km oil changes on new vehicles. Todays synthetic and semi synthetic oils are pretty good stuff by themselves. And I don't think there's any real proof that fuel additives actually work - just ask FIREPOWER investors.

                I use Pro-Ma http://fueloiltreatments.com.au/Fuel.html

My father in law is a reseller of this stuff so I get it wholesale. It definately gives better power and economy. I had my D4D in for 30k service yesterday, and the service manager agreed that if he had the same vehicle as mine, he would use the same stuff. He presently drives a Falcon XR6...... go figure??? The pro-ma MBL grease is top stuff as well. I have seen it demonstarted on a friction test unit, and it out preformed anything else on the market by a long shot.
As far as oil additives go, I agree with others. Use a good quality oil, and no additives are neccessary. Make sure that you use the same oil for all services as it helps to keep an engine going for a long time. I just sold my last diesel 4wd, and I clocked up over 400,000 kms on it, only using valvoline super diesel oil. If you have a dealer service your vehicle, always make sure they use the same oil every time....same temp range and viscosity at least, and preferably same brand.
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.
