Bit more info about the vehicle would be a good start

i.e. it's a 120 presumably as you've posted in the 120 section but what year (might help someone who's had similar problem say with some certainty what it is),

how hard a life has it had,

    how long you've owned it.

having said all that it could be the sender has given up the ghost after 15 years (or is sticking due to age) or there could be a wiring issue

Sounds like new fuel sender is needed.

Thanks diesel69& Amts ,2007 120 D4D diesel had it since new with 306 thousand kys on the clock ,just to add to what is happening the gauge finally started to register after 550 kys will see if the 90 litre light comes on when tank gets down, set tha trip meter, know I am getting pretty low at about 1500 kys mostly in city driving, maybe sender unit.

Just go with the trip meter if the fuel sender continues to play up and you don't want to spend money on it just yet. But you do have to fill up to full every time.

Just an update on my fuel tank problems ,ran out of fuel again the 90 litre light, came on for about 50 kys,& the trip meter gave me a reading of 1010 kys ,filled up would only take 80 litres, which took about 20 minutes to fill, read plenty of posts about this still not sure what is going on ,2007 D4D Diesel Prado with 3006 thousand kys on thr speedo, all comments appreciated.

That is a symptom of a blocked between tank fuel filter.

Fuel filter not blocked, posted in another fuel thread, wondering if I can get the fuel pump out without taking the tank out.I read somewhere that you can get at the fuel unit under the rear passenger seat, not sure if you can take it out this way or drop the tank ,thanking you John.
