When your comparing different fuel types you may subconsciously not push the car as hard thinking you've got the good fuel in look how good my fuel consumption is same as comparing unleaded with premium unleaded

      Re: New Diesel fuel

Hi all, this is my first post, so i hope its useful.
The diesel we buy these days is all known as G10 (which means it has maximum 10ppm of sulpher in it, but usually its around 5-7ppm) previously it was G25 (25ppm max) and before that G50, G75 etc. etc. The reason the sulpher has been reduced over the years is mainly due to environmental concerns (air pollution) and obviously legislation by the government. As of 1st Jan 2009 diesel is required by law to have a max of 10ppm of sulpher in it. I'm not sure where they get this ultimate stuff from as we don't carry it, but i'm suspicious that it was a marketing ploy when G10 was first being produced last year, but i could be wrong, i know for a fact that when it leaves the ship it is just plain G10, there maybe additives put in before it reaches the service station but i doubt it.
What i can say is how clean diesel is these days, gone is the yellow tinge and it definately doesn't foam as much as it use to. I'll try and find out more about this ultimate diesel and keep you all posted.

          Re: New Diesel fuel

After all the hype we haven't been able to get BP Ultimate diesel for 3-4 months in Brisbane. What's really going on?

            Re: New Diesel fuel

Is it back on sale in SA? Last time I filled up they said there were refinery issues and were selling the standard diesel in its place...

All bp ultimate is, is standard diesel with bp adding its own crap into it and all that does is foam less....thats it...ive used the caltex version and found no difference

Same diesel as other manufacturers.......im quite certain it does not have a higher cetane rating also than any standard diesel

having said that i use it pretty much exclusively as bp is more consistent in offering clean diesel with no water (my experience) , my filter doesnt drop particulates when i rip them out from under the hood

i flicked a quick email last year to john gadogan who is a no fuss, no BS auto journalist and he reckons its all palova.. he says the fuel is all the same, all the companies do is add their own potions to the mix to make it SPECIAL.....IT AINT SPECIAL. it all comes from the same tanker

what it does come down to is maintenance of onsite fuel tanks and how thoroughly the truck tankers are flushed of water when they get their clean

My understanding of water in diesel comes from when the tanker is rinsed with hot water, the driver is supposed to do some bog laps somewhere to let all the excess water run out of the tanker with its inspection/cleansing hole open, to let water run out.

Obviously this isnt done very well by some drivers and so we find water in our fuel, hence the need for additional filters for our trucks......The majors i think, do this a little better than the no name brand sellers of fuel, coupled with issues on maintaining onsite tanks to a proper standard are the sources of water

I am ready to be corrected if others have a better explanation, thanks

Sorry i call BS.. Fuel comes from different manufacturers, not the same tanker. and none of it is mixed at the servo level. Its all done back at the refinery/plant.

Fuel tankers usually carry the same load day in day out, they have compartmentalised tanks which always carry the same fuel. Diesel goes back in the diesel tank, 98 in the 98 etc.. They don't wash them that often as its usually not required, when they are washed however, fuel tanks are washed with steam usually. and diesel with detergent and hot water & then steam. The vehicle is grounded and does not move during this operation.

If your that interested check: https://training.gov.au/TrainingComp...IB7307B_R1.pdf which has the procedure they are meant to follow.

There is a number of fuel manufacturers in Australia, each one whilst they produce the same name fuels follows a slightly different (not exact) process and as they say some fuels are better than others.

A lot of water in tanks is from Older servo's that have older type of tanks with no bunds etc and usually metal tanks that have rusted away. Thereby allowing water ingress.

i wouldn't use their diesel again
we had a group of servos called Mogas and they used to be .20c/L cheaper, so i did 3 tanks saved quite a bit as they never followed the rise & fall of fuel, by the 3rd tank i was thinking why is this thing such a slug (D4D 6sp) when towing the boat and only getting 900km from the full tank
i was right on the low (10L left ) so i went in and filled with BP ultimate, within 20km the old car was back, now get 1200km + from the full tanks
so now i only use either caltex vortex diesel or the BP ultimate

What's the difference between Caltex Vortex and Caltex truck diesel other than the price? I think it's a marketing trick.

No marketing trick. Caltex Vortex Diesel is a premium grade of diesel which cleans and keeps injectors clean as well as foam inhibitor. Keeping injectors clean results in an efficient burn which would mean more power - IMO. BP Ultimate would be a similar product but I’ve found Caltex Vortex to be the best.

But don't trucks want to have clean injectors too? Effiecnt burn would be paramount to them being commercial opperators wouldn't it?
