Hi Guys,
I am new to this and just wanted to share an experience with you all and hopefully save some of you time and hassles. I am not a mechanic etc so dont know all of the terminology but will try to paint a picture...
I have a 2005 GX 3l and whilst playing down in Yalwal one of my belts decided it had had enough and let go. This in turn broke off a tiny peice of plastic pipe that the hose from the header tank slips over to connect it to the Left hand side tank of the radaitor. I sealed the pipe with a screw and used a few cable ties to "close" off the hose going from the header tank. Managed to coax the girl home and started looking for a radaitor repair person.
This is where the problems began. According to everybody I spoke to ( I went to 5 radaitor specilists, 2 mechanics and a plastic welders) you cannot fix this problem. The cost for a genuine replacment was around $1150 odd, and there is no after market one available for this model.
I foolishly decided that this was not a problem for a red blooded male like myself and some tubing, glue and beer induced planning was all that was needed. No. it was not. After a few days of attempt, let everything dry and set - run engine - see leak - start again..i decided that i would in fact have to get a new one.
Sitting despondantly in my lounge on the internet trolling for a better price I found nation wide radaitors. they had one for around 550 odd - it was too good to be true - but was worth a punt
They got it to me a few days later and it turns out that there are two different radaitors that are used on my truck - this was the other one.
I was really considering forgoing the pleasure of off roading and getting something "economical" but decided to ring the chaps that sent it to hear their thoughts. it turns out that i was not alone !
Very simply there is a radaitor cap on the new one, where my old one did not have it. ( on the passanger side) so after fitting it and putting on a radaitor cap it all works wonderfully! ( the radaitor cap is not a standard one, it just closes off the radaitor so the system works as if there was no cap)
So all is well that ends well - even though a little battle weary after all the dramas, and my girl now runs cooler than ever - she has all new belts as well and i now carry replacments
Hopefully this saves some of you out there some time and hassles
Jase
