  • Flywheel separation from Torque converter

Hello everyone. I'm currently in the process of removing my 1KD-FTV from my 2007 120 series Prado, in order to replace the pistons, two of which have cracked in half (as they do).
I was just wondering if anyone can advise me on how to remove the six bolts that secure the torque converter to the flywheel, before I separate the engine from the transmission.

I rang Toyota and they were quite frankly useless, explaining to me that they had not removed the engine from one of these models before, and their manual told them the transmission had to be removed first, which is absolute rubbish. They tried to tell me that I should be able to access them through the hole where the starter motor sits, but this is also rubbish.
Don't even start me on what they said when I told them my "trusty" Toyota and cracked not one but two pistons.

To me it looks like I am going to have to remove the lower oil pan, to allow me access to these bolts, as there is no way to get anything on them and apply enough leverage to undo them.
I was just wondering if anyone else has had to do this. The Hilux models are a lot easier to work on, so any advise on how to work on those will not be helpful.

    Regards Shane.

p.s. if you are looking for a replacement 7 seater tow vehicle, that leaves the Prado for absolute dead, you can't go past a top of the range Isuzu Mu-X (my replacement vehicle).

Yep, those Isuzu 4JJ1 diesels will run rings around a 1KD. An MUX will be our next vehicle, am not even looking at the 2.8.

Not sure about that mate, when comparing the new MUX to the Prado it's not that clean cut. I've no doubt that the MUX would probably win a straight out drag race, but they're cars designed for different things as well.

Isuzu Mux Engine Specs: Max Power: 130kw
      Max Torque: 430nm

Toyota Prado Engine Specs: Max Power: 130kw
      Max Torque: 450nm

The MUX is lighter than the prado ( 2075kg vs 2325kg) However take into account that the prado holds over double the fuel 65L vs 150L and that weight factor starts making a bit more sense, obviously the prado is a larger vehicle as well with the MUX being in the same class as all the other duel cab wagon varients- It'd be a better match to compare it to a Fortuner.
