  • Excessive oil consumption

    Hi guys

I’m having issues with my d4d while traveling round oz. it is using what I would call excessive oil. I have added 1.5L oil over roughly 5000ks since last service. I am towing approx 1.6T camper. No oil leaks, doesn’t blow smoke from exhaust, no injector knocks. Last 3 services oil pick up screen was clean. It does have oil vapor when I remove the oil dipstick while engine is running at temp. Oil catch can is fitted and does catch quite a bit of oil. EGR disabled via custom dyno tune.

Previous owner had a reconditioned engine fitted which has done approx 20k now. The injectors were all brand new off the previous engine before it blew, so only approx 40k/2 years old.

Apart from this the motor runs perfectly. Smooth, quite and plenty of power.

Any my advise on where to start looking?

Does it out blow black snot on first start in the morning? Put a rag over the exhaust to see how much she blows. I think using that much oil is excessive so I'd be looking. If there's no leaks or overflowing power steer tank, it's either eating it via rings etc or the turbo seals and either one is difficult to diagnose externally.

It does not blow and smoke or spot on start up. It has been overflowing power steering tank, can you explain what causes this and how it is related? Thanks

Might be a win for you then. There's a seal on the power steer pump drive. (at the timing case) When the seal goes crankcase pressure will force engine oil into the power steer system overflowing the tank. That's still a lot of oil to overflow, must be making a hell of a mess. Your power steer oil will be contaminated with engine oil but a flush will sort that once the pump seal is fixed.

It definitely hasn’t leaked 1.5L from the power steering tank, only been a slight weep

If your using the grade of engine oil toyota generally recommends - 0w or 5w, change to 10w40 or 15w40. They only recommend 0w/5w because it gives a very small increase in fuel economy at the expense of engine oil consumption. If you check your owners handbook it will show the higher viscosity oil is well within temperature range for australian conditions.

Last oil change was 15w-40. The owners handbook also startes anything less than 1L oil per 1000ks is within tolerance

Try a different oil. I notice the same when towing if I use 10w40 oil, I used around 200mL over 600km. Don't use any oil if using 15w40. Don't burn oil normally for town and non-towing highway driving. Oil's probably thinning out or misting more and getting sucked through the turbo. When you're towing, the engine is working harder and hence hotter.

Are you sure of that 1L per 1000k, not 10,000k is it? Given that most D4D's are 10,000k servicing, would be interesting.

Gonna change to Penrite 15w-50 next oil change.

Carco, it definitely states max oil consumption 1.0L per 1000ks or 1.1qt/600 miles.

On the subject of oil viscosity, I changed my servicing dealer recently and they use 10w30 oil as opposed to the 10W40 the previous guys used. After 6000kms, the oil level is still the same. The only thing i've noticed is a bit more oil mist in the catch can but it;m guessing it's only a few mls. I might insist on a higher viscosity in summer mind you.

This is a bit old, but I suspect more and more relevant: I noted what I considered "excessive" oil consumption running Valvoline Super Diesel, which was something like 500 ml in 5,000 km. Super Diesel is not a full synthetic, and conventional oil bases tend to vaporize at lower temperatures than synthetics. So I switched to HPR5 and now don't need to add any oil between changes (don't use HPR5 if you have a DPF). So I'm sticking with a full synthetic. You didn't note what oil you're using, and/or if you've tried different weights, brands, and/or composition (conventional, semi-synthetic, synthetic). I get _maybe_ 15 or 20 ml in 5,000 km in the catch can (but really less - easily wiped out with paper towel). This is a relatively new engine. If you're not using a full synthetic, I'd try that first. If it works, it's certainly the least expensive and easiest fix.
