G'day Team,
My 2008 D4D Auto has just ticked over the 200,000km mark and has been serviced every 10k. at 190,000 I had the fuel pump replaced due to corrosion and also recently replaced the Starter Motor. I also replaced the Timing belt at the required 150,000km mark.
For the past 6-8 months, very intermittently, I have have had the occasion that the accelerator does not respond when attempting to take off at lights/stops, etc, after a couple of pumps/seconds, it bursts into life, then repeats that for the next 30 or so seconds, then it all comes right. It will sometimes do it again at the next lights/stop, or it maybe a day, a week or a month later without any incident in between.
Recently though, the wife had the car completely shut down when at the lights, a quick shift into park and restart and no more occurrences.
Yesterday however, I had the same issue (from cold) come back whereby there was no initial response from the pedal, but a few pumps and away she goes. As I moved up to 60km the drops offs became very regular. I would hold the pedal at the same revs (holding at 60km/hr) and the power would drop off, then burst back into life, then settle down, then repeat - continuously.
I put on the cruise control for 60km/hr and she continued to do the same (for the 22km drive home). However; I dropped it out of D and shifted manually for a few times and surprise, no drop in power. Back into D and the issue came back, so back into 4 for cruising (no cruise control in 4 though - I assume that is as designed).
I have over half a fuel load and have been using BP diesel, so I assume that is not part of the problem. She had her 200,000km service done at Toyota and I raised this intermittent issue with them, but without any way to repeat the problem, or for them to witness it, they could not help.
I now have next to no confidence in the beast and it is frustrating me.
Any ideas?
I have video available of the dash where it can be viewed doing it's funky thing (if anyone wants to see).
