  • 1KZ-TE Intercooler-Venturi connection leaking oil

    Good day,
For a very long time I have been reading along and got many extremely valuable tips from this forum. Thank you.
Now I have a question to which I have not been able to find an answer yet.
I have a 2008 J120 with a 1KZ-TE engine with about 150kkm. Since some time, I have witnessed some oil residue on top of the venturi coming from the intercooler on top. (see pictures). This is relatively new and I was wondering where the oil is coming from. Is this coming from a leak in the turbo that presses the oil through the intercooler or does it come from somewhere else?
As I live in West Africa, the mechanics here are not very well accustomed with these machines and just tell you: it runs, so don't complain. Come when it doesn't run anymore and we'll fix it. But I would like to be on top of things and prevent problems before they occur.
    Many thanks for any suggestion.
    Cheers, Ulrich

    Hi all

I'd love to hear about this issue as well. Same issue with my 2009 J120 1KZ-TE engine. 155.000 Km. Turbo leaking and needing replacement?

    Thank you.

The crankcase breather in these cars runs from cam cover to turbo inlet. This means any oil vapour will flow through turbo, intercooler, inlet manifold and eventually get eaten by the engine.
Toyota even allowed for this by running a small drain hose from the lowest point of the intercooler to the throttle body. The engine pulls a slight vacuum on overrun when the butterfly closes and this will purge any oil build up from the cooler.
My old 90 poured oil from that area, she had over 500,000ks up. I sealed all the set screws holding the assembly together and no more leaks. The factory spring type clamps on the boost pipe are also a bit weak so it pays to replace them with good quality worm drive hose clamps. Likewise the actual hose may have gone soft from age and oil. It can be replaced with a silicone product.
Fitting a catch can is another option to filter and remove the oil from the breather air.
