  • D.I.Y Spark Plugs change out V6

Sh*t Matt. You certainly do things thoroughly. I remember it being a bitch of a job with very little access and turn movement but I managed to change all mine without removing anything. I did use every size socket extension piece I own. I didn't know about contact cleaner. Hopefully it will continue to be OK.

    Cheers - Greg

Mate .. that's an awesome write up and pics

.... and I could have done with this about 6 months ago

My research, into taking the plugs out, was conducted half in a creek and half out, while standing on a bullant's nest, with nothing but the barest essentials in tools and a desperate desire to see how much water had been sucked into the pots. ops: ops:

What I would have given then for a series of pics on how to get the plugs out ... or even where they were   ops:

    Top job mate.

    Just a quick question ....

I can understand what you cleaned with these ...

... but what did you clean with this ... ???

    Cheers
    Chippy

Changed my plugs this morning. Thanks for an excellent write up Matt.

I didn't end up removing the plenum, just loosening a couple of hoses on the passenger side and boy, what an ordeal! The driver's side took me 20mins. The passenger side took me an hour an a half and you should see my fingers and knuckles!

I fitted Bosch Platinum plugs which are good for 100,000kms so at least I won't need to do it again in a hurry.

              Cheers,
              Markus.

                  MKH (Markus),
What is the part No for the Bosch Super 4 plugs, sounds like a great idea.

Re: D.I.Y Spark Plugs change out V6

                    G'day Tolly.
I fitted Bosch Platinum plugs, not Super4. The Platinum plugs have a single metal curvy bit (I don't know the technical term for it; possibly the Ground Electrode?) on the end and the Super 4 had 4 curvy metal bits on the end. I say "had" because I don't believe they are being made anymore. The super 4 had a normal electrode though so just like standard plugs need to be changed around 40,000kms. The Platinums are good for 80-100,000kms.

                    Part number FR8 NP.

They have also released "Double Platinum" and "Platinum Ir Fusion" plugs which feature 4 curvy bits but I don't believe they have them for the Prado (yet). They're mainly designed for blown performance cars.

                    Cheers,
                    Markus.

Re: D.I.Y Spark Plugs change out V6

Over the w/e did part of the 80k service. I removed the "circled" bits to gain access. As usual the passenger side took a bit longer (moreso to find the bloody tools i dropped).

                      Hope this helps.
                      Cheers,

Re: D.I.Y Spark Plugs change out V6

Just changed out my plugs at 90000, last done at 40k bought car at 85k. Changed oil and filter blew out air filter and changed plugs $95 for toyota plugs, will look at bosch next time at 120-130K. plugs that had done 40-50k looked alot worse than those shown, had rounded electrode and gaps were much bigger than spec about 1.3mm instead of 1.1mm. Car was noticebly smoother, will have to see if economy picks up. I only took off air filter housing on rhs and disconnected hoses and took off rear manifold bracket on passengers side. Not really a hard job at all, dont have to bend in a prado, had to lay into engine on my f150. 1982 ford fairlane v8 was much worse for plug changes and took much longer. Nice write up.
