  • 120 petrol not turning over

After a little advice on my 120 which is not starting. Has been a little sluggish turning over the last couple of days so was going to check battery and clamps, earth etc this morning and it won't turn over at all. Battery and terminals are fine also added jumper leads from the old 90 series but that had no effect as well. There is not even a click at the starter solenoid so I suspect it may be the park switch on the auto but have no idea how to access it to check it.
    Any advice gratefully accepted.

Funnily enough went through this last weekend on a son's mate's car. The car was old so they changed the starter but still no go. After a bit of checking the culprit was an aftermarket immobiliser fitted back when the car was new. Same sort of symptoms, sluggish start regardless of battery, sometimes start, sometimes not.

    Things to look at:

    * Have you tried to start it in neutral (assume the Prados do this, I've never tried) sometimes there are two switches - you can override the auto and move it out of P using the button near the shift lever

    * Is the cable to the solenoid getting power?

    * Connect the solenoid input cable directly to power, does it turn over?

    * Short the solenoid, does it turn over?

These should help identify if it is a wiring, solenoid or starter problem.

In addition to MJ's suggestions, have you changed the key recently to an aftermarket one?

Thanks guys. After a bit further investigation I do have 12v to the solenoid so it looks like a problem with the starter motor or solenoid. Half way thru removing it now.
