  • How much for a reco engine(Petrol)?

Just looking at a higher kilometre 120 with good mods, wondering much a reco engine installed would cost worst case senario.
Guessing an Auto rebuild is around $5000 if needed.
Just weighing up if it's more cost effective to buy a low KM one and throw 2"lift, bullbar and rear locker, or buy a high KM with all that and more.
Or what's say 50000 or 60000 less KM worth? Talking 120000km car Vs 175000km one. I know they can get expensive above 200000km.
    Thanks for your thoughts.

All depends what you consider higher kms. Plenty of evidence of these motors purring happily past 500k with normal maintenance.
1997 petrol auto, 430 000km. Still going strong.
2004 petrol auto, 233 000km. Cracked dash and no help from Toyota!

A well serviced V6 will last a long time.
There was a thread on here about a fleet in QLD with over 750000 kms and using no oil between changes.
      An interesting read here

I'd rather expect the worst. Autos seem to go sour not long after 200000kms and I'd expect the engines would too. After seeing several second hand ones with blown gaskets and poor performance, I'd like to know what a reco engine is worth. Also curious as a few hi KM ones I'm looking at are on gas, so good chance their rings and valves are cooked.

I think you will be hard pressed to find anyone who has swapped out the petrol engine because it has worn out or failed. Pretty good engine if the services are done on time. It doesn't tolerate missed oil changes.

Similarly the auto is good but ignore any sealed for life marketing bs and get the oil flushed and changed.

Mine has 250k kms on it, no issues with engine or Auto. Dyno'd it recently and its only dropped about 9 kw at wheels over 200k kms..

We have one in one of the companies fleets that just clocked over half a million. Still going pretty well.. I think they are pretty bulletproof.

Not sure where you're getting this info from.

This is the unknown quantity buying used. And it's been LPGed. It's interstate, so I'm going to buy not inspect. So I can't smell the oil for petrol first to see if rings or valves are worn from LPG use.

Just basing it off owning over 200000km 80series cruiser and 90 series Prado. Both autos getting tired. I'm airing heavily on the side of caution. I have inspected quite a few Prados now and have seen large oil leaks, maybe only tapet cover but.

The only 2 petrols i have heard of being replaced were due to driver error and lack of care.
One had 435000ks no dramas then the young fella got it and destroyed it from no servicing.
Gas is normally cleaner and better hence taxis getting lots of kms up without needing motors.

Yeah, the only V6 I personally know of failing was a mates.
It had 360,000ks on it, and only died because he dove nose first into a mud hole that was deeper than he expected & he didn't have a snorkel on.....

And on Reco price, the only thing I have heard is in the vicinity of $4k - and thats changeover.
Reason being is that these motors are extremely reliable, so its really hard to get hold of them!!

It's not that hard. Plenty around if you look.
We've used them in some of the buggies after dropping a couple turbos on them.. Bang for buck.

Reco, around 3-4.5k. Depending who does it.

                        Crate motors are also available.

Give it a good look over and change all fluids so you have a starting point to service regularly. Good instructions here.... http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...-and-Longevity for changing tranny fluid. Toyota reckons they're sealed for life but many here don't recommend it. I did mine last weekend all up cost was about $185 including a Tom Thumb pump and 12ltrs Penrite ws compatible fluid. Old fluid was black as coke and smelly! The difference was amazing, much smoother and changes when it should now.

                              Hi Bush Turkey,
I just bought a 2008 with high kms (diesel though) in ACT. I have been talking to the guys at Hume offroad, who seem to know their stuff. Where abouts are you? Might see you on the road
