  • check engine light on V6 4000

I have just taken possession of my 2006 6 speed GXL and am highly impressed with the vehicle. When I test drove the vehicle the owner was up front and told me that the check engine light had come on and he had taken it to Ultratune where the guy had run a scan tool and told him it was crank angle sensor. When I drove the Prado, the check engine light was off, (had been reset), but the battery light was on. The car ran fine with what appeared to be no loss of power, missfires or hesitation. I checked the charge rate with a multimeter and it was fine around 14v. When I picked up the Prado the battery light was now off with the motor running, but t5he check engine light was back on. I checked it with a scan tool and it came up code P0016, which is "crankshaft position, camshaft position correlation, bank 1 sensor A". Doing some research and what I know, there is a possibility of worn timing chain, but I am hoping it is something related to a sensor, the oil, or wiring. The motor has done 266000km and is quiet, smooth, and starts and runs fine. Has anyone else had this code come up and resolved it?
    Great forum by the way!

I would check all of the connections going to the crank angle sensor (Its down near the alternator). Look for any possible wiring damage. Reset the code and see if it returns. If so, may be time to replace the sensor. Amayama or partsouq is best for price, although it may be OK locally or from the big T itself.

Crank sensor is a strange one, it seems to come up on lots of different makes and models, but when you think about it if
the sensor is faulty and the ECU doesn't know the crankshaft position then you don't have any timing so the engine can't
run. As the engine is running it obviously can't not be working.

I have a KIA that the check light would come and go, checking the codes showed crank angle sensor, a communication
error of some sort, something else which I can't remember and an EGO fault. The mechanic where I take the cars to
indicated it would be the crank angle sensor, I indicated wouldn't the motor not run if it was faulty, he hesitated then
said he thought it would. I had been considering the fault for sometime and had come to the conclusion the EGO sensor
was crook but as I didn't have a code reader that could read the KIA codes I took it to my mechanic just to confirm it
was the issue. Replacing the EGO sensor fixed the problem.

I would investigate the charge light issue as a faulty alternator can cause all sorts of errors, does the car have a booster
      diode fitted?

Thanks for the replies, The engine light came back on. I drove it about 10km to get a roadworthy test, and then drove it back again. The Prado ran beautifully. I reset the code again and it has stayed off for the 10 minutes it was running. I am sure hoping it is not the timing chain. There is some noise on startup like lifter noise that goes away after a few seconds. I checked the voltage from the obd2 port and it was about 14.8v. I will check with a multi meter, but if correct I would think 14.8v is on the high side.I am going to do a full service and oil change on everything and see if that helps. Any recommendations for the best oil for the 4000?

Do they have a hydraulic tensioner on the chain?

Crank shaft position sensor errors can have several causes, mostly I have seen to age and heat, so while at the early stages of failure/error it occurs after you drive and get the CPS hot and its sensor signal drops to a point of being flagged by ecu as being out of range "Red Engine light" it is a warning for you to get a new one before it fails (fit a new one), this is most likely why it still runs like a V6 does beautifully but when it fails you will most likely be stuck. I am just glad there is a way of ECU to let you know it is the problem instead of trouble shooting with no codes.

There is a hydraulic tensioner on the chain and I believe that it is designed to not return as it adjusts the slack.
Hobes, I am hoping it is the sensor and will replace it as that will be a much cheaper and easier fix than a timing chain.

Oil for the 4.0ltr? Depends on your budget, semi synthetic or full synthetic, either 10W40, 10W50, 15W40. I’ve been running full syn 5W40, and being such a thin oil in an engine that’s done over 370,000kms, it’ll use a bit of oil between services, so I’m going to start using semi syn 15W40 and see how that goes in the old girl.

After watching this I am feeling more like it is the timing chain. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=il9iR095teM. This is a fantastic tutorial but maybe a bit involved for most people,(including myself), if you don't have the diagnostic gear or experience. The vehicle is running fine, though having only had recent experience with it I have nothing to compare it with.
The battery light has not come on again and the charge rate is within spec. The check engine light comes back on generally right after startup and will stay off if you reset the code then and there only to return on next startup. Hot or cold seems to make no difference. There is a light ticking sound similar to aircon compressor which may be timing chain noise. Anyone know what a bad timing chain sounds like on a 1GR-FE?

The v6 has an inherent exhaust noise which is a light compressor sounding tick. Seems to be a lot of guesswork going on in this thread.. Maybe a mechanic can cast some more ideas over it to find the real issue.

I am a mechanic myself, and although still active in the trade, it is no longer my full time employment.. Trying to find someone who has specific knowledge of the 1GR-FE is going to be the most helpful path, but there are so many varied opinions, I may just have to bite the bullet and physically check the chain and see if it is worn and if so, just put the hours in to changing it.

Have you yet looked at the crank angle sensor.. Seems a long way to go around repairing something that might not be the issue..

I could be wrong, but the likely hood of the crank angle sensor creating a correlation error seems to be less probable than the timing chain which can physically account for a difference between the cam position and crank position. If the crank sensor was bad I would think the motor would run bad. Have you ever seen a crank sensor create a correlation error? I would love for that to be the answer as it is cheaper and easier than a cam chain.

There is a small inspection plate over the chain tensioner, and i am wondering whether it would be a good idea to remove the cover, (four bolts and reasonably;accessible), and check the slack in the chain and how far extended the tensioner is. Anyone ever done this?
