  • Valve Clearance Check Melbourne - Mechanic Recommendations

    G'day Everyone,

Wondering if someone can recommend an independent mechanic who could check the clearances on my 1GR-FE for me?

    Cheers

WOW had a chat to Chadstone Toyota. They want $1280 just to check them. More if they need to change any of them.

Apparently standard procedure is to never check them, just get the mechanic to have a listen and if it is quiet it is all good.

I would still love to have them checked if I could get it done for a price which isn't a joke. Otherwise I suppose I have to do it myself..... which I really haven't got time for.

I had to tear my 1GR motor down to change the timing chain. The motor was pretty dirty inside and the chain was very worn. I checked the valve clearances while I had the chance and they were all surprisingly in spec. There is a lot of hours to remove the rocker covers and check the valve clearances and also a pretty big job to change the clearances if they are out. if the clearances are too tight, you risk burning out valves and you wont hear any noise until the valves become damaged. You should hear ticking if the clearances are becoming too loose. Has it done many kms? Is it on gas? if so, worth checking. I would check the timing chain as well as it is not that difficult, Just remove the cover over the tensioner on front of the timing case near the power steering pump and see how far it is extended.
