  • Coolant slowly drops in overflow tank is this normal

    Hi all
hope somone can help, I seem to be loosing coolant from a fresh top up in the expansion tank in 6000km it’s gone down to almost half way can’t see any leeks. Recently had a new rad, water pump thermostat cap and it pressure tested and nothing obvious that there is a leak but it seems to be loosing a small amount of coolant slowly and consistently it’s never got below the low level on the overflow tank but not sure where to look next. It’s a 2007 v6 with 200,000km
    thanks for your help!

Check the radiator cap perhaps replace, check for signs of radiator fluid crystals around the edges of the radiator for possible leak. Everything else may be expensive.

      Thanks for your help Eddie

I have already replaced the radiator cap but no difference. I Mentioned this multiple times to my local Toyota service centre but they don’t seem to worried by it other than replacing the above which all had slight leaks I’m unsure wether this is where the coolant level is at the right level and this is normal?..... all my other vehicles iv owned the level tends to stay at the full line and not really drop at all between services!?
Just out of interest where are other people’s overflow coolant levels sitting with a cold engine?

Frustrating to try and find the cause. I once found the cause to be a crack in the overflow tank itself. Put a piece of cardboard under the car overnight to catch any drips, eventially found a wrinkled patch on the cardboard.

Is there any white or brown sludge in the oil cap?

No sludge , I’ll try the card under the overflow tank. Yeah frustrating and being a relatively new vehicle to me ( purchased at 165000) the coolant has always dropped to the same level since iv owned it never overheated so maybe that’s just where the natural level is at!?
          thanks again Eddie!

Coolant might be leaking into your engine somehwere, get it tested.

What level should the coolant be at with a cold engine, Is a standard level at the full line or between the low and full lines just interested to know where other Prado 120 v6 coolant levels sit as I have nothing to compare to and I’m getting different views when looking on line about coolant levels!?

Mine sits about 1/2 full when cold. Will have to check where it sits when at full operating temp, but a trip to get some petrol today brought it up another quarter. but always seems to return to the same point when cold (I have the level marked on the tank with a black marker), so not using any fluid (touch wood) at this stage.

No worries. Hope its just an external leak and you find it (heater hoses/element?)

                    Cheers Eddie F.

My South African 2005 V6 120 - very, very long story short, turned out to be a minimally failed head gasket. Didn't even notice a misfire, just noticed the coolant needed to be topped up slightly every now and again - over about 2 years! - and later on, the 'gurgling in the dashboard'.

Engine is in pieces now, waiting for gasket set. Wet cylinder was no. 3 - see the following links I dug up after some research on the web:

Hope it's just an external leak, too.
