  • Water pump - reputable brands?

    Hi all

About to do the timing chain cover leak fix on my Prado GRJ120 (2005). Figure I may as well replace the water pump since it's now at 265k and I'm going to have it off anyway. Gates, Protex and Truflow are the three brands I keep seeing around. Anyone used them with long-term success (or short-term failure)?

No experience with those brands however I just got the genuine one. There are some things I'd get aftermarket, water pump, oil pump etc I'd use genuine with genuine Toyota coolant. I think it was about $230 odd from the dealer. But cheaper if you get it overseas.

BTW, whats the fix you are doing on the timing cover case? The issue below?

Thanks for the input! I bought the Penrite 500,000km coolant, apparently it is same spec as Toyota stuff and realistically, I know other jobs will need doing that will require more coolant drains so I'm not too worried about it.

Yep that's the job I'm currently working on. One helluva job and there are mixed message about whether I should drop the oil pan or not. I've got the cover off but when I put it back on, I have to make sure the silicon really gets in there well if I don't want a leak from where it joins the oil pan.

Returned the Penrite coolant and bought Toyota. After all this effort, the extra $40 for Toyota coolant was a no brainer. Stuck with the Aisin water pump though. Given they manufacture for Toyota I’m hoping the quality is the same (weighed the old Toyota one and new Aisin one and they were within 10g of each other and almost identical other than weep valve)
