  • 1GR-FE overheating

I have an 04 prado grande with the v6 4.0L

Earlier today noticed the temp was higher than normal around 60-70%, took a look at the coolant reservoir it was extremely low.
I filled the reservoir with coolant now the temp constantly changes and goes into red randomly. Some roads will be fine, then suddenly without revving it up or anything it will go into red.

Any ideas why the coolant went low, and why the temp is constantly changing now?
Thanks, any help would be appreciated before I have to pay a professional.

I had something similar to this a few years back. Temp would spike, specially if speed was over 80kph. Turned out the viscus fan coupling had low viscus oil. (Special oil from Toyota.). Ordered a tube of it, took the fan coupling off / apart and just put the entire tube in - as had been the instructions from the Toyota mechanic. put it all back together and problem was solved. That was years ago. Could be worth a look. Could not tell any difference in fan before or after when inspecting with engine off or on idle. I never had low coolant though. That would be something else.

Our 2004 GXL V6 which my wife drives on daily basis overheated at 167,000kms from a headgasket issue resulting in warped heads (she kept driving it and did not know it was running hot until the engine started making loud tappet noises and was sluggish at which point she informed me)
We had to get the engine fully rebuilt and source another set of heads to also be fully rebuilt and a new radiator/hoses/ injectors/O2 sensors x 4/ also swapped in a new aircon pump and fuel pump with a total bill over $10k from a workshop owner i know and trust comes from Toyota trained background and knows his stuff as builds race engines etc as well.
It is now a 4.1 litre engine with the overbore piston/rod kit and 40,000kms later still feels like a fresh engine.
These quad cam engine do not like being overheated at all as you will stuff up the heads real quick
