  • Engine Life of 4.0 V6

Just how long (km) does the 4.0 v6 last before it needs an rebuild? A similar question in the 90 series section showed just how good the 3.4 V6 is so have Toyota got it right again with the 4.0? How many Km have you done in yours and with what transmission? Running LPG? Anyone had to rebuild theirs yet? Would like to know before I decide to upgrade from my 90 series with 290k km to 120 series. :?: :?:

Re: Engine Life of 4.0 V6

The 1GR-FE is a well engineered and reliable unit which is used on a number of other Toyota models besides the Prado, particularly in the U.S. market. It has been around long enough now and does not appear to have any common areas of failure. Just how long a V6 motor will last is dependent on a number of factors such as:
    - How well the engine has been maintained.
    - Quality of lubricants used.
    - Driving style.
    - Operating conditions.

My V6/Auto is heading towards 200,000km which is not particularly high mileage, but I can report that there is absolutely no smoke on cold start-up or under heavy acceleration. LPG is typically harder on valves and the top end due to the additional combustion temperatures and lack of lubrication on the valves themselves. I believe you can flash-lube the upper workings by installing a lube kit when running LPG. If the motor has been well maintained and driven responsibly, there is enough anecdotal evidence to suggest trouble free motoring well into 300 000 - 400 000 kays. Usually it's not the motor that goes in the end, it's all the other stuff, which of course can become fairly expensive.

Another advantage of upgrading to the 4.0 V6 from the 3.4V6 is the smoothness of the engine, particularly at 2800rpm. This was the speed that the 3.4V6 developed a noisy vibration, which unfortunately coincided with 110km/h in 5th (manual gearbox). Searching for the solution, the result was - live with it - they all do that... Thankfully the 4.0 is far quieter and smoother.

There is a guy on here that has done over 400k with no real major drama's, as someone said it comes back to maintenence and care. Check the thread how many k's has your prado done.

my opinion is like above, regarding the servicing and quality products used (eg. oils) and how regularly you thrash it i suppose !

Its always best to buy a car thats say done 200 000 km mostly highway driving rather than a car similar age and only has done 80 000. fair enough price wise will be different and what not but ideally, having the engine running on "hot temperatures" rather than the cold start drive the kids to station come back stop engine cycle will reduce its life. you think about the starter motor, the spark plugs, ignition coils winding the engine to start it on and off again and again which one would be better off?

again, people look at the car based on kilometers, it depends on the individual and how well the car has been cared for. again know one has a crystal ball to decipher when the car will create troubles but we all hope for the best the prados keep going !

My 2003 120 V6 Auto did 257,000 trouble free K's with no mechanical issues before I replaced it ( lease expired ). Serviced, with oil & filter changed every 10,000k, and auto serviced every 80,000k. That's the secret to long engine & transmission life IMO.

+1 agreed and making sure that it actually gets serviced correctly rather than hear the toyota sales who dont even know what they are on about.... holden is just as worst , 15 000km service and they "adjusted the handbrake tension" ???? you gotta watch out with people these days, they will sting you if your not careful.

                V6 4.0L engine Life Expectancy

                hello everyone!

you guessed it - i'm after life expectancy of these engine - apparently google searches best i can find it someone that has 197(miles) just shy of 303,000k's on thier rig still going strong?

does any one know how far these will go without any major overhaul?

the wife and i are looking at Prado's over the next year or so want to be armed with as much information i possibly can be before purchasing one. and in our current price bracket these rigs all come with around 216,000 / 300,000+ k's i am not sure i'd want to buy one with such high k's on the engine however if someone knows that these will go a good 500,000k's with no major over haul i could rest my mind a little bit if i buy one with a few higher ks' that i'd like on them.

what have you got what is to many k's to buy a prado with? should i be okay if i buy under 300,000? this will be used as a toorack tractor / weekend drive to water falls / look outs through fire trails nothing off the main roads often

so what are your thoughts or how many k's have you got on your 120 seires ??

Mine is 170,000km at the moment and still going strong. They are very reliable. Only issue with it (and it is VERY rare) is the collapsed engine mounts.

275,000 on my previous 2003 V6. Not one engine problem with it. 165,000 on my current 2009 V6. Replaced auto trans in the first 3 months under warranty and a loose fuel line, which could have burnt it to the ground, but other than that, not one engine problem. Very strong motors, and if serviced regularly, no reason why it should not easily exceed 300,000.

so would buying a prado with the V6 4.0L engine be okay if it has close to 250,000k's? -- or would this be completley madness?

I had a 90 series 3.4lt v6 that did 370'000ks in 13 years no problems, as a matter of fact the mechanic that looked at at the Toyota dealer when I bought the 150 purchased it privately from me. If the one you are looking at has honest log books it should be fine.

See ya on the tracks, Richo.

my 1999 GXL petrol 3.4 snowt edition did 340 000kms. I started servicing her at every 5000kms and replaced all bushes and suspension.
                          She still went like new.

                          Now thats the 3.4.

The 1grfe motors from the 120 series which I own now are more reliable, more powerful and more fuel efficient.
                          I can see them passing 400 000kms.

Keep the services up, change the oxygen sensors and air flow metre they will provide you many years of happy trouble free motoring.

the 1GRFE is pretty legendary now.

                            Not at all.
                            Do a compression test.
                            Check the overall condition.
Go for test drive and listen for noises.
Make sure they dont warm it up for you. Start when car is totally cold.
Check for coolant leaks. Check oil dip stick.

Most of all at that kms negotiate a bloody good price for yourself.

Then if you do get it.
                            Change the O2 Sensors
                            Clean the Air Flow Metre
                            Do a service
Coolant flush and change hoses if need be
                            Change gear box fluid

Twice I purchased the 90 series prado with around 255 000kms. Not a problem.

                            Good luck

No problems buying at those klms mate, 1 of the only vehicles I would though, purchased mine 14mths ago with spot on 200k on it, 1 owner car, full logs, no offroad, just had a big service with all fluids (diff, trans, etc) + a new radiator, battery and air conditioner compressor, paid $16k for it, Ive run up 30k between now and then, towing a van from QLD to sydney, through blue mnts etc, been up a tonne of beaches and a fair bit of offroad, runs like a dream, uses no oil, no coolant and I have no doubt she'll go 500+, some bloke on here uses hiluxes for work with the 1gr-fe and has a few above 500k with 1 above 800k with minimal work, The motors are rock solid, and an accountant blindfolded could do a basic service on them. Seen a few lately around the 180k to 200k mark for $16 grand, At that price it's good buying.
