  • 2007 vs 2008 model

    Hi There,

Just looking to get a 2nd hand Prado next year. Just wondering if there is much difference between the 2007 and 2008 model? On carsguide I can tell from the pictures that the the volume control for the sterio is more integrated into the steering wheel. Is this the only difference?

Also, does anyone know if prices drop a lot of previous models as soon as the calendar year clocks over? Just wondering the best time to pick one up. Also, how many KMs roughly will the petrol engine get before a rebuild? Most cars I am looking at have around 150k on the clock... just hoping I dont need to spend much on it for a while!

    Thanks.

Are you looking for a D4D? Toyota made a change to the diesel injectors around that time due to the rattle issues. If you are buying an 07 and the previous didn't insist Toyota to change out the injectors, then it would be very hard to try and get it replaced under warrant if the warranty has run out.

Yes - a MY08 GXL with option pack 1 is essentially a MY07 VX without leather

        Petrol vs D4D

I have not yet decided about the engine type yet. Pros and cons of either petrol or Diesel - I think the running costs probably add up to be the same. 3 friends all have petrol and say they are fine.

Whats included in the option pack 1? How do I tell if it has that?

Does a bull-bar add much weight to the car? I'm thinking at this stage a nudge bar is probably lighter and do pretty much the same (if I dont plan on hitting any large wildlife).

You might want to consult the wildlife on that one first

Bullbar doesn't add a huge amount of weight.

Nobody plans to hit wildlife and it's a great investment when it does it's job even just once.

A nudge bar is just a way of mounting lights or aerials to the front of the car. In my opinion they're pretty useless.

Depends on which bar you pick. The steel bars are around 80kg and if you plan on adding a second battery (especially an AGM) then you can add another 40kg so that would mean a spring upgrade. Agree with comments that a nudge bar is nothing but a place to mount lights as they don't do much else.

The first D4Ds (Aug 06 to Sept 07) had different injectors to the Oct and Nov 07 engines and different again to the Dec 07 on. Bear in mind these are build dates not compliance or delivery dates. Anecdotally I would suggest that the greatest proportion of injector problems have been with the first series of injectors but I cannot be 100% sure. It would seem all series have had their problems including the latest injectors fitted to the 150 series which are supposedly essentially the same injector as used in the last of the 120s. Search this site for all the info.

From the Aug 06 build the specs didn't really change but the main influences on build are whether option packs are fitted or not. There are two option packs for both the manual and auto GX and GXL which add electronic aids and rear airconditioning just to name a couple of the items. An auto GX or GXL with option pack 2 will pretty much get you a VX without leather, that's what I drive when I am allowed.

If you want to see the applicable brochure pm me an email address and I will send you the pdf.

Based on the ones I looked at, there was also a minor change in early 08 sometime? At that time they changed at least the clock/thermometer into the more advanced trip computer, not sure what else they tweaked at that stage. My Sept 07 (build date) has the steering wheel stereo controls, climate control, ducted A/C etc, but the dash clock is just a clock and thermometer, however I drove some mid 08's that had the full on trip computer.

The change depended on the option packs fitted. OP 2 had the rear aircon and climate control so there were changes to the dash because of that. Otherwise the brochure and spec was unchanged after the D4D was introduced until the 150 came along.

There were a few changes both to engines and other bits around that time. Pretty much a Gx become a GXL with out driving lights, stacker, alloy wheels and a couple of other minor things. Depending on what you want to do you might be lucky to score a GX with option pack which also gives you traction control and down hill assist (but dont think down hill assist is in the manual ??) this would be cheaper then a GXL. I have a 120, had 2 95's prior and (not been a big head or anything like that) but must say its the best prado I have owned out of three of them. Love the V6 4L goes like dog shot in the ar#e, comfortable, big tanks, good vision, absolutely love it. Yes definatly thirstier then the diesel (no doubt about it) but I did get 11.6L per 100 last rip away and if you check a few of the others its very possible for these figures, towing, well if I was retired and towing I would buy a diesel D4D with out fail, but as I probably tow a few weeks of the year Ill deal with the extra fuel consumption (roughly18L per 100) round town about (not exact) 15/16 per 100 remember this is driving without been a lead foot, put the boot into it every time you drive it and you will see 20's. But I love it when some doosh doosh machine pulls up the left side of me and they think there going to kick my arse before their lane runs out. ha ha love it when they pull back in behind, this is where you will drink it driving like that. Havnt had it on stockton beach yet But Im presuming there wont be any issues with the dunes as my old 95 V6 did it very well and a lot easier then my 95 T/D 1kz. If I can say one thing and maybe just my opinion dont get the 1kz (think the last of them was 06 ?? Not sure on that one) personally think to under powered and definately not economical like you would think.. Wont matter which 120 you get you will love driving it, the earlier 120's had issues with the rear door hinges cracking etc but fixed under warranty but wont be an issue if your going for 04 upwards when they changed rear door mounts/door from the factory. I must have been unlucky as I wanted a VX but were none around at the time and I wanted traction control, etc but had to settle for the GXL (still happy ) I checked 5 grande's and all had rust in the sunroof (on the sunroof itself) couldnt believe it, from 04 to even an 08 (may have been 07 caant remeber now) but were rusted. There seems to be plenty of people on here with grandes and no rust issues with their roof but just some thing for you to be wary of if looking at grandes, there nice.......Regards Steve

My 2008 GXL didn't have a trip computer but had everything else. Also had roof rails as standard. Mine also had 6 disc in dash CD and Bluetooth capability.

Shmick, not sure where you are from but a mate of mine still has his 2008 GXL D4D 6 Speed manual for sale if you are interested. PM me and I'll pass his details to you. The car is in Central QLD.
