    Hello all

great site , just what the doctor ordered

I own a 80 series landcruiser (petrol fuel guzzler :cryand am seriously thinking of upgrading to a new 120 prado, i am still trying to work out which engine / transmission package to go for. i like the idea of diesel (range , economy etc) but i also think i would like the power of the 4.0 litre petrol v6.
however, i was under the impression that the 2006 prado would get the d-4d common rail diesel from out of the hilux but i havent heard or read even a whisper about this proposed update, so i was just wondering if anyone here has heard anything......

    Hi Darren,

    Welcome to the forum!

I heard on another list that the D4D should be here later in 2006 (about September). They might include the 5 speed auto also. They need the five speed auto to compete with similar diesel vehicles on the market at the moment.

The reason we just bought a V6 petrol is that it is a more advanced engine (the diesel is due for a technology update) and the diesel wasn't available with the 5 speed auto. I love the 5 speed auto, no more manuals for me. (Hard habit to break trust me!)

Anyone else got any goss' on the new Prados?

    Drew.

Hi drew thanks for the welcome.

yes the fact that the 4.0 liter petrol prado has 179 kw and a five speed auto is very tempting let me tell you.
i guess in reality the fuel consumption is the only thing holding me back.....(after owning a petrol 80 series  )
Are you able to give your fuel consumption figures drew ??....

          Hi Darren.

We live out west of Gawler, so a lot of our driving is at 80-100Km/h, but I usually get about 14.5L/100 from our 2005 V6 "manual" with 265/70/17's on PULP.

Not exactly what you were after, but it’s a start.

          Paul.

            Thanks paul ,

Any infomation is better than none.....
those figures are reasonable i think , considering your rig is lifted with the larger tyres and bullbar etc.........i mean its not a little toyota echo , so these are realistic figures....

love your rig by the way.......... you are making me jealous.....and im getting itchy...

                Fuel Consumption figures

                Darren,

I've only just taken delivery of our Prado on Thursday - so I haven't had a chance to get any consumption figures. I'll post some data as soon as it appears.

I'm expecting about 13.5 to 14l/100km. We live in a country area and my commute to work is a mix of mostly 100km/h and 80km/h zones. We live in the Mountains and I work in the valley though, so I have to climb 640 metres to get home up some steep windy bits (Bellbird Hill for those that know it) so that is going to knock my consumption about a bit.

With my 2005 Subaru Forester XT Turbo I averaged 10.2l/100km in 9 months - the ADR quoted figure is 11.9 so my mix of driving resulted in a lower figure.

If I apply the same delta to the ADR derived figures for the Prado (13.2l/100km for the auto) I should get about 12.2l/100km. It will be interesting to see how it pans out considering the Forester absolutely guzzled the fuel when towing our new camper trailer, it really was too much for the 2.5 litre turbo.

I think I've seen that bumper style around for a while on foreign spec Prados - I could be wrong.

                Cheers,

                Drew.

                        Fuel Consumption

                        Hi Matt,

Thanks for the fuel figures. Sorry for the delay getting back - it's been a BUSY week.

My first re-fill gave a consumption figure of 13.64l/100km. The 90 litre annunciator came on at 702km (12.8l/100km).

Driving was to from work, which is mostly 100 and 80km/h up and down a mountain and some 60 zone stuff near work, 68km return each day - two trips to college - and a trip to Hill End, coming back on the Bridle Track with about 20km of low range or slow travel.

The vehicle is fitted with a Soverign bullbar and a cargo barrier and I've removed the third row of seats. I'm a fairly sedate driver and don't (usually) drag off the lights. A couple of high speed overtaking moves with full throttle prolly burnt a few extra dinosour bones! 8)

All in all, not such a bad figure as ppl have said for the size of the vehicle. I'm very impressed. Didn't do any towing yet (that's this weekend) so we'll see.

                        Cheers,

                        Drew. 8)

This is NOT accurate way to check fuel consumption. Try to fill your car
now that 90L light just come on. Don't be suprinsed if you can fill 120 Liters or so....

Mine are using around 16L per 100 with BP Ultimate, Unichip and 2" lift,
around 18L per 100 on LPG....

Fair enough, I wondered about the 90L light. The total fuel used for kilometres traveled is accurate though, been doing it that way for years.

 I wonder it my work would mind if I borrowed a fuel flow totalizer gauge out of the cockpit of the B707. Nah, might get sacked! Would be waaay cool though. Might be a future project for when they decomission the aircraft!

                            Cheers,

                              any fuel consumption updates?

Just got our GXL V6 and have done 640 clicks without the 90L light coming on. 40% hwy, 60% city. Won't always full it up but wanted a starting point to have for reference.

Most fuel gauges have their own personality, and this is no exception, over 200kms before it got down to the 'Full' mark. I do miss my Subaru's trip meter
