  • Me thinks it's the air-con compressor but opinions sought...

    Hey bush mechanics

    Got a 1KZ 2003 model.

Over the last couple of months, have noticed a quick squeal that last 1-2 secs, every few minutes while driving. Air con is still working fine, as is everything else.

My thoughts are that it might be the clutch in the air con because of the cycling pattern. I figured that if it were the bearings it would be more constant?

I'm open to your thoughts and suggestions (within reason!) If you can explain the basic mechanics of the compressor/clutch even better - what would cause the noise, what $$ is a repair/replacement likely to be etc etc.

    Thanks in advance

    Andrew

Is it only with the air con switched on, or always?
    Stretched fan belt maybe?

I would say the belt is streched and may need a slight adjustment. Sounds like when the compressor is kicking in the belt has troubles gripping for that split second. Just give it a slight tighten up and see how you go, Id also check the condition of the belt 03 model probably be the original belt. If you decide to replace it go genuine........Cheers Steve

mine does the same, definitely the belt slipping. Tried tightening mine but it snapped soon after. Replced the belt and no long after started squeeling again. I now just live with it.

          Gday blackvx & Seamus

Did you check the crankshaft pulley (Also called a harmonic pulley) by drawing a line across the front of the pulley?

If you draw a line across the front, rev the engine to make the belt squeal then switch the engine off and check to see if the line is still complete.... if the line that you drawn has separated then it means that the rubber in the harmonic pulley is worn and slipping.

Here is the link to the old thread

yeah mate I am 99% sure the squeel is from the belt on the AC compressor pulley, pretty easy to hear it with the bonnet up.

03 grande v6 , with added stuff that makes it go places . RTFM people !

Thank you all for your prompt replies. Shall get the belt replaced at the next service.

I thought if belt has been tightened and snapped then the second belt tightened but still squeals and checked the idler puller bearing by resting your ear on a long screw driver near the idler pulley to check the the bearing if you don't have a Stepha-scope then wouldn't a simple line drawn on the crank pulley be the cheapest & easiest diagnoses to eliminate as appose to pulling everything apart and replacing?

                  Cheers

If its still the genuine first belt then its due for a new one anyway due to klms and more so age in this case. Pulley bearing is a different noise then a slipping fan belt, I have found anyway.....Cheers Steve

I fully agree about a bearing noise being totally different to a squealing belt but if belt is new and fastened tight but a squeal is still present then the crank pulley needs to be eliminated from the prognoses!

EG: The external part of the crank pulley is bonded to the internal part of the pulley (rubber) that bolts directly to the crank shaft and if deteriorated it also will squeal the same as a belt. Hence draw a straight line from the middle to external of the pulley and once simulated the squeal turn the engine off and see if line is still aligned. If moved then the crank pulley (Harmonic pulley) is kaput!

                      Cheers

Neat trick in regards to checking the crank pulley. Now if it was a commodore you just have to listen to the racket the harmonic ballancer makes when idleing, sounds like the front ends about to drop out, sure lets you know when its stuffed. Does the 120 V6 have the same ?? Cheers Steve

The trick is to diagnose it before it collapse. (distinguished by a squealing under load) Not all engines have a harmonic pulley but most later engines do and also have a haul sensor on the back of the pulley (Crank angle sensor).

Why is the commoder V6 being compared to a Prado?.... Did i miss something!

                          Cheers

Na didnt miss anything, just the commodores are that frign noisy compared to a prado when the harmonic balancer is stuffed. As said if you have ever heard say a VN,VP,R,S,T, or VX when the thing goes bang, sound like the exhaust has dropped onto the ground lol.....Cheers Steve
