  • Climate Control heater

    Hi everyone,

Had a hectic past few days having the injectors replaced in my 07 GXL. It has 83,000kms on it and after a compression check, the Toyota dealer tried telling me that I had to replace the whole motor. After installing the new injectors however, his tone soon changed. All is good now except that today when I turned the heater on nothing came out except cold cold air. I have tried running it without A/C on, with A/C on, MAX cold, MAX hot. It only wants to pump out cold air!! I had it at 33deg which is MAX - engine temp at 86 deg (normal) and nothing but cold air! One more thing to add is when I start the car I can hear water gurgling under the passenger footwell. I thought the overflow pipe for the A/C may be blocked but this is all clear. I cant figure out where the water noise is coming from.

Does anyone have any info about this? Could it be a result of Toyota doing the compression check and injector install? All the heater hoses seem to be connected fine and have hot coolant running through them.

    Any advise is greatly appreciated.

    Brad.

I may be totally wrong but I'm sure I have read this before some where and it was a coolant airlock in the system. I would open radiator cap, start it up and let it get to temperature so any air in the system will bleed its self out through the open cap. This will probably take 15 mins or more to get to temp then allow it to bleed. I will google search it but Im positive I have read that some where !!! Not sure what the procedure is for replacing injectors on a D4D but fairly sure there would be no need to remove cooling hoses or pipes ?? maybe.......Aircon drain pipe will have absolutely nothing to do with the heater not working, only if aircon button is on for heating or cooling but for drainage purposes only from the evaporator. If this fails then Id be taking it back to them ans say fix it as it was working prior, its obviously some thing they have touched, maybe a sensor or some thing under the bonnet for the climate control eg outside temp probe ?? There are few probes/sensors for the climate air to work properly.......Cheers Steve

Thanks for the tip steve. I will try that tomorrow and see how it goes. The dealer I took it to is 150kms away and I vowed never to go back there. If I find it was a result of something they have done - their going to know about it!! I did a quick google search as you mentioned and I didnt like what I saw. A few sites mention (not regarding D4D's) that no heat from heater is the first sign of your head gasket going! Im certainly hoping its not considering the amount of $$$ I forked out for the injectors! I cant afford a new head too!

Howdy. Um.. why did he say the motor was naffed after the compression was checked?Did he give you the readings? Sounds unusual.

Hmmm. I wondered the same thing. He jumped straight into saying it would be cheaper to put a new motor in than pull the existing one apart and find the problem. That amongst many other things made me realise how incompetent he was. The compression was only slightly down in cylinder 4. Obviously caused by the faulty injector. I don't have the new injector readings as the same bloke (who is the service manager mind you) did not know how to use the ITT to test te injectors.

Anyway back to topic, I couldn't resist so I tried what Steve said just now. It did make a difference in that the heter started working but... It only worked when the revs were above 1500rpm. Anything below and it would pump out cold air. Bring the revs back up and the heat would kick back in.
          Strange or what?? I'm lost.

Again I may be wrong but I swear I have read it some where and now your at this stage I would bleed it some more (please dont open cap when hot) I havnt heard of blown heads in the D4D only the 1kz's like I had (very common). I have just got in and about to take off again but when I get home tonight I will be searching for my comment as I know for sure I have seen it and read it for myself. I may not get back to you till tomorrow or really late tonight. Out of curiosity maybe take out your thermostat and replace it. Its coming to mind but will definately be googling when I get home dont like things to beat me lol....................Cheers Steve

Hey steve. the 1kz you blew the head on, was that in a 120 or a 90?

If you have air in the system you need to take it for a run and get it good and hot with the heater control set on max heat to bleed it out, then top up coolant.

                Cheers Andrew

I'd also go with AJ'S idea but id leave the cap crackd open at the pressure relief spot so air can escape the system. Just keep an eye on your temp guage dont want any hot pockets then causing you head issues. Hope these replys are readable at swimming... Cheers Steve

Is there a Bleed Valve for the coolant?

Thanks for the replies so far guys. I took the car to the dealer this afternoon and he gave it the once over to check all the sensors were hooked up properly. Nothing out of the ordinary was found. He wasn't too sure what was causing the heat to stop when at idle and disnt really have any further pointers as he hadn't heard of this before.
There is a little black plastic cap near the coolant filler on the reservoir for the 120's - I'm wondering if I crack that and drive around whether that will bleed the system?

I still can't get my head around the sloshing water noise under the dash - sounds like the kids jumping in the pool Steve!

Cheers steve... I knew about the 90's doing it... I hadnt heard it happening with the 120's - thanks for confirming.

Cheers Steve! I'll just let it run longer without the cap on and see how it goes. I tried searching the forum for hours and couldn't see anything that related let alone find the thread u posted! Thanks again!
