  • A bedtime story

G,day I have owned a 2003 Prado Grande for 6 yrs ,it had 40k on it when I purchased it. I had LPG fitted the day I picked it up ,as of today it has clocked 220K & aside from servicing ,brakes & tyres I have never put a spanner to it .It has been washed & detailed within an inch of its life every week in that entire time [cause its my way of relaxing OK !!] Now as I am 62 its time to smell the roses so I recently ordered a caravan with a total weight of 2.1 tonne .That same week I figured it was time to make a decision on some wheels ,I really dislike the looks of the 150 plus the 2500 kg was not viable. My good mate purchased a Pajero VRX 2012 recently & has just completed a trip "around the block" he av 13L/100 for the trip sitting on 95klm/hr, so that was my que to say thats my next rig !
Now that was the pre amble....Well I picked up the van last week from Cobram & headed back to Echuca @ 120 Kays distance ,the terrain is as flat as aunt maudes chest & about 10 gentle bends & not a breath of in the entire trip. The speed was kept at 95 ,which unloaded equates to 1900 revs, this increased to 2600 revs & remained at this for the entire trip. The gearbox was jumping up & down as if it could not work out what was going on but I tried to maintain a constant speed. I refilled the gas at Echuca .It was no surprise that I used 20l/100 for the short trip ,this was no big deal it just re affirmed my thoughts of moving on .
I surfed the internet for a week & made up my mind on a Pajero Demo Platinum 2012 its not a Grande but my budget was 55K & they tow 3000kg.I found one North of Melb & the dealer said 6000k & $52500 bewdy sez me & off I go after spending 3 hours cleaning the girl up.I had looked at the retail sale of my unit @ $ 26k ish now I have some decent kays on so I factored that in.
I made an assumption of $ 20 to 21 k at the worst case. I have brand new bridgestone A/Ts[5000]k on, rev camera, gas , dual batts ,blackwidows .So you get the picture its not shabby !
Well ,they said what a well maintained car I had ............. $14000 !!!!!!!! yep you read correct $14 friggin grand they sez ! A lovely vehicle but too many kays they sez ! So up I get & say OK & proceed to leave, well without boring you any further we chatted for about 10 mins & I got them up to $ 18000 with them saying what a good deal I was getting.I sadly had to inform them that time was not of the essence I bade them a fond farewell & headed back to Echuca.I did get to Kilmore Before they rang & upped it $1000 more but I happily said I shall not be returning in the near future ! So here I sit in limbo somewhat despondent and a little boozed cause the Swans have won ,at least the Prado is really clean ! Cheers

$30k buys plenty of fuel....stick with what you know!! After driving across cultivation in my stock & station agents pajero and seeing the dash try and vibrate out of the cab I reckon I'm to stick with ladder chassis vehicles

Were you towing in Drive, or in 3rd?

Gas consumption is generally a lot higher isn't it than if running on petrol, if u got 20l/100 i would think that is around 16/17 running on petrol which i would be really happy with, Pajero's r cheap for a reason???

I understand your disappointment, however a trade in guide of $18900-$22300 is what Carsales.com list a 2003 Grande with between 140,000km-230,000km: http://www.carsales.com.au/car-valua...ion=4294800434
So, while $14,000 is a bit too low, $19,000 is probably getting close to the mark (without accessories) and represents a retained value of over 26% compared to the price when new of $71,990.

To put it into perspective, a 2003 Pajero Exceed has a trade in guide of $10,100-$12,500 for a vehicle that was $61,740 when new which represents a retained value of only about 16%: http://www.carsales.com.au/car-valua...ion=4294809127

At any rate, I usually negotiate based on a total changeover price that I'm happy with and let them juggle the trade in valuation and new price as they please, as long as it is within the maximum changeover I'm willing to pay. If not, I go elsewhere or sell privately.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of upgrading the suspension or at least fitting rear airbags on your new "Bitsamissing". With the van on the back, it will drag it's arse all the way around that big block, not something that you'd have to worry about with the Grande's self leveling rear air suspension...
