  • installing third 3rd row seats to a Prado that never came with them

Anyone have any info on how to add third row seats to my Prado?

My GX does not have the bolt points on the floor or the side mount points. I suppose the process might be similar to this one:

let me know if you have any ideas....

    Thanks

    Uncle Frank.

For the cost and effort involved, I'd consider flipping your Prado for one that has rear seats. Just IMHO.

You would need set belts as well. I would be looking into the legal side of things, if it is registered as a 5 seater then adding the third row seats might be hard.

Weigh up the cost of seats, seat belts, mounting hardware and any legal issues and as cfryback said changing vehicles might be a better option.

      Cheers Andrew

thanks for your input - i appreciate it. I was hoping to keep the car for about a year... but i just found out I have some relatives coming to visit in summer - so I may need those third row seats to throw the kids in the back.

I don't mind doing a weekend project - just wondering if anyone else out there has put in stock or aftermarket third row for their 5 seaters.

I figure I can get the seat belts for about $100-200 and the seats for $200-300. ebay/gumtree/wreckers for sourcing.
Unsure of the cost of mounting brackets and compliance/engineering cost as you both mentioned (which I didn't even think of!).

        cheers

Renting a car would certainly be a much cheaper option for a one time thing.

As long as you use genuine components compliance may not be an issue though you may have to take it to a Toyota dealer dealer and get them to give you a statement indicating that the have been fitted correctly. You will need hinge barckets for the left and right side, can't remember if the strikers for the floor are bolted in or not but seem to recall they are & seatbelts & buckles, possible the side trims dont have cut outs for the belt so you might need them too. My brother looked into it, not worth the effort of cost. The GX doesn't have the center lock down points for the seats. If you were to consider this option you would need a wrecked prado to get all the required pieces, some would have to be welded into position.

I know this is an old treat but just to note I have just done this and its quite simple for a 150 series prado. I took seats and seat belts from a GXL 150 and installed them in my GX 150.

For the seats, all the bolt holes line up, although the rear seat nuts are hidden beneath the metal floor - just need to punch/drill a hole. Need 10mm grade 8.8, 30 mill bolts. A little bit of trimming of the rear plastic is required.

For the seat belts, they have all the bolt holes apart from those in the floor. Drill a hole in the floor, install a backing plate with a 7/16 bolt nut combo (buy for $10 from automotiverestraints.com.au) and done.

I still need to license it for 7 seats but should be straight forward as there is a rule whereby retro fitted optional seats can be installed without engineers certs.

Took me about half a day to complete. Others may choose to sell and upgrade but for me, I picked up the seats for a couple of hundred dollars so easy mod.
