  • Roof rack problems

Got myself a new Rhino roof rack to replace the Tigerz one today.
After taken off the old rack i went to put the new legs in from Rhino and found that the front drivers side bolt locator lugs have dropped into the roof cavity.
The only way to get them now is to remove the roofliner ???
Did a google search but could not find much about removing the liner.
Has anyone removed the liner that far back ?
The airbag is above the driver door just under the liner, so a bit scared to be pulling at things up there .
Any help with this would be very much appreciated guys

Are you sure? From memory there is a tapped plate in the roof with tubes going up to the roof. If the tubes have moved but you can still get the M8 bolts to start just use lots of Sikaflex. Actually use lots anyway.

Yeah there are 2 white plastic tubes that stick out the top, thats what has dropped inside.
I did try to start a bolt but there is nothing i could find in there just a rubber bottom.

Ok, fish around a bit with some TIG wire, you never know your luck. You could probably fit an M6 rivnut but then the other bits will be rattling around. Without toyoDIY I cannot remember the detail but worth a try before pulling the lining.

            Hi Graz
This sounds like a bit of a sh!t to recover!
I am not sure if its possible to access the "Bolt locator lug" from within the roof lining side.
I had removed the B pillar trim (the one that the seat belt appears from next to drivers seat backrest) to mount and wire Map reading lights.
You have to pull the door seal rubbers away on both sides of the pillar and separate the pillar trim from the kick/scuff trims.
Then pry the trim clips that are fastened to the pillar.
With a good small light you may then be able to see the offending loose item at the top section of the pillar and recover it.
            Good Luck!

Well bugger me i went down to Toyota and spoke with them and they said yeah sure we can do that,it will only cost $800 plus for any parts that break ( vents and anything else that breaks a clip )
Looks like its time to start ripping out what hair i have left and start pulling the car apart

Try a panel beater, or motor trimmer. They should be able to do it for a fraction of what the dealer is suggesting.

So after Mr Toyo scared the crap out of me with his price i spent the day trying to figure out how to pull the roof liner down.
Well it did not take long at all.Just had to take out sunglass holder, Drivers sunvisor, drivers grab handle and drivers side door pillar panel.
Then just pulled the roof down above the door and its held on by velcro.
The hard part was getting that part back in its dam place.
hard to tell by photo but there is nothing under it to hold it in place ?
Pic 1 is stick i had to make up to get it up there as its to tight for hands
The plastic under it slopes down and away and would be 20mm from the bracket. So needed a bit of wood wedged in there to hold it up for me.
All up about 3-4hrs. But i am a little handicapped. So Toyota would take half the time. Think they might of giving me a bum quote just so they did not have to do the job ?
