  • Intermittent faulty rear door lock on a 2008 GXL

How to fix an intermittent faulty rear door lock on my 2008 GXL? It happens when very dusty when traveling and although we've managed to "click" it open after several tries I fear it will fail completely. I have noticed that the plastic sheathing around the parrots beak has been shed off. Simple solution or expensive replacement?

Do you mean that the door doesn't catch when you close it, rather than it not "locking"?

I have had that happen before after being on dusty roads for a long time. Use compressed air and / or water to clean it out, throw some silicon spray or graphite in there afterwards and you should be good to go.

    Cheers Andrew

Closing seems OK ... the problem is when unlocking. I have to "click" the handle and the door key several times together to open the door.

If you activate the unlock by the key fob and then don't actually open a door for 30 seconds, it relocks. Could this be what you are experiencing?

Yeah sounds like dust jambing things up in there.
Like AJ says, give it a good clean and lube.
I'm not sure what you mean by parrots beak?

I would still suggest giving it a clean and lubrication and see how you go, if that doesn't work then you may have an issue with the actuator for the door lock.

            Cheers Andrew

Not really .... it's an issue when using the key fob immediately. I appreciate that delay will mean the auto re-locking will happen. But thanks for your point.

Thanks Andrew .... I'm coming to the same conclusion. George

I've always understood that the visible bit of the lock mechanism which clicks over the bar is in the shape of a parrots beak .... hence the reference.
