My Toyota dealer explained to me at my 40k service how the injectors don't need to come out for valve clearance checks in the 150.. So those deals ain't getting done in 150s. Can someone confirm this is the case, which is different to the 120 where the injectors need to come out for valve clearance checks?

Get the mechanic to pull out the old 'copper' seats (yours is 2007). New DLC one's look a world different . Get him to photograph the seats in position and coming out, then arm yourself with the service book...??????

Simple. It will say on the service invoice for the parts used.
As they have to supply new seats because they are not re-usable.

Thanks for the confidence, how do I prove they did not change my injector seats at 40k, 80k and 130k?

    Thanks again,

In regards to 'good' service it wasn't 'perfect' because it hasn't been conducted by Toyota. Minor services conducted by myself with major services being conducted by local registered reputable mechanic.

Apparently, according to the dealership, the injector seals should be changed during the 40,000km service step of 'check valve clearance'.

What I still can't get my head around is, why would Toyota issue this recall advice, pay for the seal changes, if they are telling me everyone should be having their seals changed on a regular basis as part of their normal service schedule.

    Thanks again for the help,

Pretty stupid of Toyota that one hey?
They must have said, look guys ( talking to service managers on Skype meeting) with the capped price serving, I know you can't afford to pull the injectors & check the valve clearances & chances are they will be ok, so just do the audible.
Otherwise they surely would wipe their hands off this monumental stuff up.
While your trying to figure it out, let me know why you think they had different seats in all engines by 1/08 but didn't start this programme till 2/15
    7 years after?

    Hi All,

Long time reader, first time poster!

The reason I'm posting is to get some feedback on my issue and if the knowledgable forum members believe I have a case against Toyota.

Last weekend my 3L diesel Prado 120 Series - stalled when travelling around 70km/hr. Restarted it and it sounded dreadful. Had it trailered to Toyota the next day.

A little bit of background: Approximately 4 weeks earlier I had received the Injector Seal recall letter from Toyota and put it on my "things to do" list, besides there was no urgency associated with the recall, as a matter of fact it stated that the recall will be open until May 2019. Plenty of time!

In my initial discussion with the Toyota Dealership I mentioned that the issues and symptoms appear to be related to the current recall. He knew of the recall and mentioned that if the trouble has been caused by the failure of the injector seals then Toyota should be liable and "are normally pretty good about these things" and should fix the issue.

That afternoon he called me and agreed the seized motor has been cause by the blockage of the oil pick up, which in turn was caused by the failed injector seals. I supplied my service history, described by the dealership as "Good" not excellent, but he thought it was good enough for my case.

He detailed that they were required to create a report with photos, budget/costs associated etc and send off to Toyota.

A week passed, and today I received the call from the dealership "OH WHAT A FEELING" urghh He said that Toyota have nothing to do with the issue because the vehicle should have had it's injector seals changed every 40,000km. The Service Manager had never mentoned this 40,000 service in the whole time leading up to this call.

    My questions are:
Since when do your injector seals require changing every 40,000kms?
Why do they need to issue a recall if the seals are being changed every 40,000km's?
Has anyone else had this same issue? If so, how have they progressed their case with Toyota? How do you escalate past the dealership?

    Vehicle Details:
    Prado 120 - 2007
    246,000k's
    Toyota Serviced up to 130,000k's
Minor services completed by owner with 3 major services conducted by local registered mechanics.

I realise the vehicle has done a lot of k's but I'm feeling particularly frustrated, it's been regularly serviced and can't help but think they are just trying to shut me down ASAP.

Any thoughts, would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Stu
    Sorry you didn't read enough.
I've been telling people about this for a while now & it's URGENT!
Please check thread in my signature.

Facts: if the vehicle was serviced by Toyota the seats should have been replaced at 40,80 &120k you choose who to take to small claims.

The letter on this thread & your service book is all you will need. It confirms that seats should have been changed.
Precedence has been set! It's on the court register.
This is a fair example of my experiences I see for myself & others have shared, regarding toyota warranty.
I'm quite suprised Toyota are supplying the parts & some labour to the dealers to fix what should have been done in service.
Maybe toyo Aus told the dealers not worry about valve clearances? Well tats another topic.

Answer 1. It's always been the case in the 1kd here in Aus.
Answer 2. Because they were not getting done! lots of engines were seizing up, court cases, they had to do something.
Answer 3,4&5. Yes, go to dealership who did the service & small claims. You have the facts in writing!

    Go for it!!!!!

In lieu of doing the injector seal replacement every 40K what Toyota elected to do was to do an aural check of valve clearances by listening to the engine running for any unusual sounds - like a loose tappet. No noise = no valve adjustment = no need to pull the injectors in order to adjust the valve clearances. Hence the seal replacements never got done. Ever. And that was contrary to their global service guidelines but okay by local (Australian) requirements. Too late for some. Also, engine failure did seem more common on those owners towing for extended periods due to the persistent and increased engine temps and fuel usage. Just like mine.

So when you mentioned the dealership said your service history was "good" not great, what's that mean?
What service intervals were missed & where abouts have you been getting your car serviced?

If its been dealership serviced, even if for instance you missed the 40,000k service but got it serviced on the intervals either side, I would say that they should be attending to or at least bringing to your attention important issues like the injector seals if they had been missed.

I haven't had a need to take anything to Toyota Australia, but a well written letter with all the details wouldn't hurt in any case.
Apart from that, I think consumer affairs would be the next port of call, but Id be exhausting all the avenues at Toyota first.

You got 246,000km you should consider yourself lucky. Mine went at 73,000. Mind you mine was due to injectors failing.

Toyota have never removed and replaced the seals at 40,000km intervals here in Australia.

Thanks for the replies folks. My letter is actually a recall letter from Toyota, unfortunately it is currently with my service manual at the dealership. Absolutely no where does the recall letter mention 40,000 change of seals??

Has anyone ever taken any complaint to Toyota Australia? Higher than the dealership?

    Thanks
    Stu
