  • Installing OBD2 bluetooth scanner on M-OBD Prados

If you have an early model Prado that has a 4 spped auto or 5 speed manual, the OBD port has an M-OBD protocol. The usual OBD2 devices like Scangauge and Ultragauge won't work. If you have a later model Prado, you won't have a problem with the connection and this thread isn't very relevant to you.

There is a workaround and it involves getting the following:
    1. An Android device (smartphone or tablet). Sorry iOS users
    2. An OBD2 device off ebay - KW903 (https://m.ebay.com.au/itm/KW903-ELM3...&ul_noapp=true)

    3. You must buy the Torque Pro app from Google Play store ($4.95). Don't bother with the free version as the free version doesn't allow the input of the special text string below.

In order to get the OBD2 device to communicate with the ECU (on M-OBD Prados), you will need to add the following text string into the Vehicle Profile's "Very Advanced" setting. Skip this step if your Prado is OBD2.

    ATIB 96 \n ATIIA 13 \n ATSH8213F0 \n ATSP4 \n 0100

    Here is a screen shot

When you do a fill up, edit the Vehicle Profile settings and change the "Current fuel level" slider to 100%. It will then calculate the Distance To Empty (DTE). For mine, there is something wrong with the Avg L/100km as I have a V6 and it is showing 10.6L/100km (this would be a miracle!). Due to this error, the DTE figure is also wrong. Also the app needs to run everytime in order to calculate the DTE properly.

Here are the gauges I have set up. The transmission and coolant temps are useful.

Here is a screen shot of the fault codes that got picked up after performing a scan

    Notes:
    1. If you have a 5 speed auto or 6 speed manual, you won't need to enter the special text string as the vehicle is already OBD2 compliant. The device will work straight up.
    2. The Torque Pro app is only available for Android devices. Sorry there are no equivalent apps for iOS.
    3. When the OBD2 device is plugged into the port, it is constantly powered on. If your phone or tablet's bluetooth is on, it will connect to the OBD2 device. I found that I could check the starter battery's voltage while I was inside the house with the Prado turned off.
    4. You can setup the default bluetooth device that the Torque Pro app should connect to. Then every time you start the app, it will automatically turn on bluetooth, if it isn't already turned on.

Works on the 1KZ, haven't taken it for a drive yet but it connects and there are supported sensors there; MAP pressure, intake air temp, coolant temp, L/100km average, engine revs, fault history etc. I'll take it for a drive at the weekend and check it out further.

Nice one Andrew, I have been after something like this for ages. I just ordered the device off eBay and am keen to try it out. Can you read and reset error coded with this? could be very helpful for diagnostics.

As per the screenshot in the first post, it found a fault code. However I don't think it means anything as B2799 relates to the immobilizer. Currently I have the 2 airbag suspension fuses pulled out and the "OFF" light is blinking on the dash and it didn't pick that up.

If anyone knows a way to generate a fault code, let me know. O2 sensor maybe?

Unplug your maf sensor and start the engine. That'll trigger a CEL event. If Torque won't clear the code, leave your battery neg cable off for 10 minutes.
I've never had a problem clearing codes on various obd2 vehicles with the app, obviously m-obd is unknown territory.

Looks like a great find. Am I correct in assuming this will not work with the free version I use on another car currently?

No it won't work, the free version won't let you input the config string.

Btw from your user name, you don't suffer from mad cow disease do you?
