  • I have just successfully got Torque to work with the string described in the first post here with "Use Alternate OBD Header" Selected. I have a known M-OBD 2001 VX with the 5VZ petrol. I used a Jaycar OBD-2 adapter https://www.jaycar.com.au/obd-ii-eng...RoC2ssQAvD_BwE Its a little pricy but after trying 2 unsuccessfully EBay adapters decided to try a more supportable option and they were kind enough to let me try before buy.

A couple of points to note when buying an adapter:

The protocol standard for these prados seems to be one of these. The config string configures type 4 below but other sources on the internet suggest its type 3 - Ive yet to try changing it.
    3 ISO 9141-2 (5 baud init, 10.4 kbaud)
    4 ISO 14230-4 KWP (5 baud init, 10.4 kbaud)
If you want to check an existing adapter, open it up and confirm that there are connections to Pin 7 and Pin 15 on the Data Link Plug. There wasn't any soldered connection or tracks on these pins in my 2 cases so they would never have worked. I went back to my original items and they didn't list the standards so it would be a good place to start to confirm both these protocols are in the supported list of any Wifi or Bluetooth adapter you try.

Thanks everyone for the info I have read to get this far.

    • Unfortunately mine doesn't work either with this protocol selection...

      • Thank you everyone, I've managed to get connected to the ECU.

Now I can truly find out if it's my temperature sensor or my temperature gauge that is occasionally reading zero on a engine restart when warm.

I thought I'd also reply to say this is still all working (Torque Pro, and the header string, and settings JoshD has suggested above).

        • got this set up on a 2004 D4d with A350 4 speed auto box. (japanese import SWB) used the string from the from the first post with torque pro and a response brand obd11 reader (cheap) Got it working but not able to show transmission temp or common rail pressure. I have a foxwell scan tool which shows these both (using the toyota tech codes). I am looking to try the thinkdiag bluetooth tool that scans and reads the toyota tech codes as well as full OBD2. Might allow me to view all. Anyone got any other thougths?

            • Hi. I’m having trouble connecting. Have a European Dec 04 3.0 Diesel 5 speed Auto - KDJ… Have tried a Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connector interfaces. Torque Pro can read other cars but not my 120. Have opened the Bluetooth one and it’s hard to see if 7 & 15 are connected. Just solder blobs. Have tried everything suggested here.

Do I just buy more adapters until one works?

2004 does not have the right canbus output for most readers.

                • Can anyone tell me if this will work for a 2005 KUN26 Hilux?

                  • I'm having a Landcruiser Prado Model Code: LJ120L-GKMEE with a 5LE 3000cc engine from 2004 and would like to connect a reader to it.

Can someone indicate which reader to go for and how to make it communicating with my Prado

                    Thanks

Given the 5LE manufacture date, it will be M-OBD, not OBD2.
So look for an M-OBD connector to use with whatever app (like Torque etc)

2005 models had the first of the 1KD-FTV engine in it so most likely you'd be looking at a OBD2 connector.

                        • Thanks Vaelen, having searched the WWW for a M-OBD connector, but nothing pops-up, only OBD type of connectors
It seems difficult to diagnose my type of Prado, even Toyota France was not able to, telling me that my configuration of Landcruiser is not sold in Europe.

                          • Not sure if this is covered elsewhere, I did a bit of research and couldn't find much about using an OBDII scanner on an M-OBD vehicle with iOS.

I'm running a 2004 Toyota Prado (Australia) and wanted to use an iPhone instead of running Torque Pro on an android.

I have previously tried to get an OBD scanner to run on my car with no success, however decided I'd try and re-spark my attempt recently.

I purchased a new OBD scanner on eBay here and went on to download a whole heap of OBD apps on my iPhone to see which offered custom connection protocols.
I have managed to get my OBD scanner to read my M-OBD vehicle using a bluetooth Car Scanner. Info below on how I configured and connected:

(Hope the below helps out a fellow iOS user)

                            Setup:
Under Connection profile, I used Toyota OBD-II / EOBD K-Line/KWP + extra sensors

Under Adapter OBDII, set Bluetooth LE (4.0) as connection type (assuming you have a bluetooth OBD scanner)

Select Advanced Settings under 'You can configure ECU protocol, initilization string and more in advanced settings', the select Use custom under 'ECU initilization mode'
                            Under 'Custom initilization string' enter: ATIB 96 \n ATIIA 13 \n ATSH8213F0 \n ATSP4

                            • Gday everyone, looking to grab a scanner and wondering if anyone knows of a bluetooth scanner and app that will give you things like the injection feedback and pilot inject period etc or is that good stuff saved for the hand units?

                              • I have a inquiry for all the OBD guys out there, my neighbour brought his 2003 1KZTE Hilux over to me today with the CEL on. I have a scantool that talks to my 120 Ikz so I went to plug it in and the Hilux doesn't have an eobd connector, so i went to go old school and opened the diagnosis plug on the engine to bridge out TE1 and E1 to get the flash codes. Unfortunately it only has E1 and B+ with connections in the plug. Anyone got any ideas of how to get the flash codes out of it ? as we are 2 weeks away from getting a converter plug, Australia post are so fecking useless.
