I've found over the past year or so my drivers seat belt has been getting slower and slower on retraction.
To a point I got sick of it staying at full length if you twisted the strap taking it off. Resulting in the belt getting caught out the door, awesome in wet weather....
I Pulled the seat out and B Pillar trim off the other day, then removed the belt mechanism from the pillar.
I figured it would just be a buggered or tight coil Spring mechanism or something.
Whilst it had a fair bit of fluff and some dust on it, once all out of the car it worked 100% perfectly. (Insert annoyed look here)...
I cleaned it up by blowing the dust and accumulated lint off with some compressed air, and stretched the belt out and washed it with sugar soap. 10 years of use it was looking a tad dirty in spots.
Reinstalling it back into the car I found it was again tight and not retracting properly...😐
Having a closer look I found it was actually dragging at the top mount (shoulder).
This was caused by a buildup of grime and dust rubbing off of the belt when retracted.
I simply unbolted this mount again and cleaned it with the edge of a thin steel ruler. And then a piece of emery paper, ( smooth side against the belt surface).
It now retracts as good as new.
I'd suggest having a look at this mount before pulling anything else apart.
The mount. Arrow shows the gap after cleaning.
