  • 120 steering rack replacement

    Has anyone replaced the steering rack and pinion on a 120. I have to do mine soon and it looks like a tight fit. Just wondering if it comes out without removing to much. I've done heaps of Hiluxs but not a Prado.

      I tried replacing the Bushes on the rack mount and found that because the bolts are extremely long I couldn't even get them out due to the AC Compressor being in the way on the LHS and something else that i cant remember on the right.
      Not sure if there is a special way to remove it or if you have to unbolt and remove other components of of the engine to get it out.
      For every part broken comes the great opportunity to upgrade, enhance and improve. Just dont tell the other half how much its going to cost.

        Yep its tuff going twisting that rack out of there.
        I worked mine out from the drivers side.
        Some research stated that the front diff was dropped to access the rack, blow that..
        The alternator removal allows the A/C to be unbolted, this mounts through the serpentine belt tensioner assembly on the V6 model.
        The actual steering wheel shaft can be a bugger to separate from the rack splines also.
        Strap your steering wheel to the drivers seat slide mounts to eliminate movement.
        Use liberal amounts of your preferred penetrating fluid prior to starting the job, on any bolt/nut that you think you might need to turn.
        Catch your steering fluid and remove your pipes keeping things plugged for cleanliness.
        As you would be aware the mounting bolts can be a pita.

          I might give it another go as you have made it look less daunting.
          I had a shot when i was doing the LCA bushes but ran out of time as they took all day. (im glad ill never have to do them again, worst job ever :sad
          Ive been put off doing the UCA bushes just knowing how hard it is going to be.
          For every part broken comes the great opportunity to upgrade, enhance and improve. Just dont tell the other half how much its going to cost.

            Im about to change my steering rack in my v6 120 series. How long does it generally take, and what is the best way to go about it. Hopefully they have been done by a few people now

              I am 90% of the way through replacing my steering rack on my 1gr 120 series. I removed the mounting bolts for the A/C, and was able to remove the rack mounting bolts, but it was very tight. When I was ready, I slid the rack to the passengers side until the tierod end cleared on the drivers side so it could come out the front. I then wiggled the rack out the front. It wasnt to difficult. Now the new rack is in. I was able to do this despite my brain injury. This took me between 2 1/2 to 3 hours to get the rack out.
