  • Keys

I have been reading my way through many posts regarding keys but can't find the answers I'm looking for.

We've just bought a 2005 VX & were only given one key, which seems to be a "without wireless" master key, after checking the manual. On a side note I can't believe a 2005 model car came out with this type of key.

So we'd like to get a spare, after searching the web have come across a website that sells a transponder key for $20, but I'm getting a bit confused with all the talk on programming them etc. Can anyone shed a bit more light on this for me.

Also is it possible to get a wireless master key that doesn't involve spending massive $$ through Toyota. The manual shows that the car the both key options. Or I guess another option is aftermarket wireless??

Sorry but I'm a bit overwhelmed with info at this point. lol

I'm no expert but have all 4 keys for mine but have been doing a little research to get another remote.

So you have no remote key with buttons ?

You do have a plain black toyota key that operates central via door lock and starts car ? (Ie a master key that has a chip in it but no remote ?)

There's a mob on fleabay called amalgamated locksmiths who get goid reviews in other threads on here. They have a bricks and mortar shop in newstead. Might be worth phoning them and then the day trip as they do 2 remotes for around $80.

Got mine from them last year and then got it cut locally. Programmed myself using their instructions from that link as the key cutter wanted..........$250........... to program it for me. Took 2 goes to get it right but no problems since.

If you only have the valet key (i.e. does not have the lock/unlock buttons), then it is going to be a bit more expensive than just buying a complete key from ebay.

If you do have the master key, then it will be cheap to do.

Prados usually comes with 2 master keys (black with 2 buttons) and a valet key (grey with no buttons).

Note that there are also 2 versions of the key. It has to do with the transmit frequency. Make sure you get the right one.

Yes thats right, no buttons & plain black.

I rang a Toyota dealer & using the VIN No of the car he told me they could do a remote key with buttons but he couldn't see that it came with just a plain black key, which is a worry.

I also called Amalgamated & he quote $185 for one with buttons, I'm presuming this is programmed, he can also do just another black key for $99.

So did you just pay the $37ish & then the cost to cut key & programme yourself? It states on their ad you can open the key up & check the number but this key can't be opened.

Yes, but my old one had the buttons. The casing was falling to bits and held together with superglue.
