  • Don't lose your keys...

Hi everyone. Here is a tip I wish I had before I bought my 2003 3.0TD Prado! I checked every tiny thing before I signed the contract, I was really careful. Picked up the car, the dealer handed over the key (not keys).

The thing is I only got one master key (the one with buttons). I can get a slave key (no buttons) cut for $80, or another master for $400! If I ever lose my only master key, I am up for $1500 for a new imobiliser system. I said can I have the trade price, and the Toyota dealer said "That IS the trade price"

So the lesson is ask the dealer how many keys there are before you sign up. Make sure there are 2 master keys.

    Cheers, Paul...

Are we talking a new purchase or a second hand?

Personally myself (As most others) did with their NEW purchase, it came with 2 remote control keys and a spare blank (no remote) Key in the gloxebox service manual.

If yours was new, its the first I have ever heard of this happening as they come from the factory with 2 keys and a spare non remote one.

If this is the case, I would be talking to the dealer principal on the matter and then consumer affairs.

No, it's a used car, 2003 model. Sorry I didnt get a NEW one  It was intended as a tip for used car buyers.

I got 2 remote keys and 1 "valet" key, which allows the user to open the doors with the key, drive the thing  but not open the glove box.

        God knows why

          keys

You should also have been given a tag with the security keycode number on it, as it is needed to get a replacement key >>IF<< needed.
          > it's in the book !! <
NO code equates to having the lock pulled apart and code obtained or new security system.
TRIED to get the number tag OR number of code from Grand Toyota for 3 months after buying a NEW prado in 2003, then gave up in disgust.
