  • Aftermarket (K&N) Air Filters

I wonder what other owner's opinions are on after market performance air filters such as K&N?

I had a K&N in my SAAB Turbo Coupe, it was great, instant power boost, and the turbo sounded awesome.

I had a Finer Filter in one of my Subarus. It fell to bits. It had done over 200,000km. I don't know whether it died from lack of care or what.

My concern is that I spend a fair amount of time off road (I even live on a dirt road).

Also, Safari Snorkels advise against the use of oiled foam elements (I guess they mean Finer Filter and UniFilter types.) See website here. I wonder if this applies to K&N. I guess I could phone them but I wanted to hear some input from others.

    Cheers,

    Drew.

Looks like I've found an answer:

    http://forums.overlander.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=40307

    Doesn't look good.

For some reason, the Overlander forum won't return any hits for K&N or K*N searches, hence my post here and the deeper digging on OL.

    Anyone here running a K&N?

    Drew.

      Thanks for that Matt,

I wonder if some of the problems experienced by the people on Overlander are a result of a different filter format, i.e.: barrel verses panel.

      Any other opinions?

      Drew.

I have a uni- filter in my hilux that has been there for 2 years. Saw lots of dust along the Gibb River Road in October when the road was very dusty. Never had a problem with dust getting past the outer sleeve bit. The inside section has always been very clean. Safari say not to use one with their product but don't say why...
I will certainly put one in my Prado before heading off on big trips.

p.s. the paper filters tend to fall apart if they get wet!!

I got K&N filter for aournd 30K now. I would only use it while driving
on sealed roads. The moment you drive of to unsealed road it is
better change it back to OEM filtter.

I.e I would not use K&N filter for offroad work ....

And I haven't noticed any fuel economy with driving with K&N filter
          vs driving with OEM filter.
